Job summary

Clean Harbors, Inc. is seeking a Receiving Chemist I to handle receiving, sampling, profiling, coding, consolidating, and shipping waste in compliance with environmental regulations and company procedures.

The role ensures safe handling, accurate documentation, inventory control, and proper processing of incoming and outgoing materials to support efficient facility operations. Responsibilities include QA/QC activities, instrument maintenance, and coordination of inbound/outbound shipments.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree (or two years of college) in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or related field required.
  • 0-3 years of laboratory, hazardous waste, environmental, chemical handling, or related experience.
  • OSHA 24-Hour certification required.
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification required.
  • RCRA and DOT training required or ability to obtain certification.
  • Working knowledge of chemistry principles, hazardous waste identification, and chemical compatibility.
  • Experience with laboratory sampling, chemical analysis, or waste characterization preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, inspect, sample, and analyze incoming hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials following WAP and procedures.
  • Profile, code, and process waste using company systems for proper handling, disposal, routing, and billing.
  • Perform QA/QC activities and maintain accurate lab records and documentation.
  • Consolidate, repackage, and bulk compatible waste while safely handling hazardous chemicals.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound shipments in compliance with DOT and logistics procedures.
  • Stage waste for shipment to approved facilities with proper labeling and records.
  • Verify incoming shipments against manifests, resolving discrepancies as needed.
  • Maintain chemical and cylinder inventories, supplies, and organized storage areas.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and analytical instruments.
  • Safely operate forklifts and material-handling equipment to move drums and waste.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment per OSHA, EPA, RCRA, DOT, and Safety rules.

Receiving Chemist I Summary

The Receiving Chemist I is responsible for receiving, sampling, profiling, coding, consolidating, and shipping hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials in accordance with environmental regulations and company procedures. This role ensures the safe handling, accurate documentation, inventory management, and compliant processing of incoming and outgoing waste while supporting efficient facility operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities

  • Receive, inspect, sample, and analyze incoming hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials in accordance with the facility Waste Analysis Plan (WAP) and company procedures.
  • Profile, code, and process incoming waste using company systems to ensure proper handling, disposal, routing, and billing.
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) activities while maintaining accurate laboratory records and documentation.
  • Consolidate, repackage, and bulk compatible waste materials while safely handling hazardous and reactive chemicals.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound shipments in compliance with DOT regulations and company logistics procedures.
  • Stage waste for shipment to approved disposal facilities while ensuring proper labeling, documentation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Verify incoming shipments against manifests and shipping documentation, resolving discrepancies as needed.
  • Maintain chemical inventories, cylinder inventories, laboratory supplies, and organized storage areas.
  • Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and analytical instruments.
  • Safely operate forklifts and other material‑handling equipment to move drums, containers, and waste materials throughout the facility.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while complying with OSHA, EPA, RCRA, DOT, and company Health & Safety requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications

  • Associate degree (or two years of college) in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field required.
  • 0-3 years of laboratory, hazardous waste, environmental, chemical handling, or related experience.
  • OSHA 24-Hour certification required.
  • Forklift certification or the ability to obtain certification required.
  • RCRA and DOT training required or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Working knowledge of chemistry principles, hazardous waste identification, and chemical compatibility.
  • Understanding of hazardous waste regulations, waste profiling, shipping requirements, and environmental compliance.
  • Experience performing laboratory sampling, chemical analysis, or waste characterization preferred.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Windows-based applications.
  • Experience maintaining accurate documentation and inventory records.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb, and perform repetitive manual tasks throughout the workday.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts and other material‑handling equipment.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work around hazardous materials while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to distinguish colors and maintain depth perception for safe chemical identification and handling.
  • Ability to work in an industrial environment while following all safety procedures.
