Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) seeks a Research Staff Scientist assigned to the DIII-D fusion facility in San Diego, CA. The role focuses on real-time plasma exhaust monitoring and advanced control using physics-based and AI state estimation, integrating with the Plasma Control System and high-resolution diagnostics.

The candidate will lead real-time diagnostic and control activities on multiple devices including KSTAR, contributing to core-edge integration research and disseminating

Qualifications

  • PhD in plasma physics, nuclear engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience post-PhD.
  • Strong analytical and English communication skills.
  • Experience with real-time diagnostic development, PCS deployment, data streaming, and AI/ML for diagnostics.

Responsibilities

  • Advance real-time plasma exhaust monitoring, state estimation, and control for core-edge integration in fusion devices.
  • Develop and deploy real-time feedback-control on DIII-D for plasma exhaust control including edge-plasma applications.
  • Interface with PCS development groups and deploy real-time computing systems and imaging data.
  • Lead real-time diagnostic and control activities on KSTAR and other devices; disseminate results.
