Job summary

Summit Speech Therapy in Plano and McKinney, TX seeks a warm, knowledgeable Dyslexia/Reading Specialist for after-school tutoring. This part-time role focuses on individualized reading support for elementary and middle school students.

You will work one-on-one, build foundational literacy skills, track progress, and collaborate with therapists to reinforce learning in a positive, student-centered environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Reading, English, SLP, or related field.
  • Experience providing reading instruction, literacy intervention, or tutoring.
  • Experience with elementary-aged children.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based literacy instruction.
  • Experience with reading differences or learning challenges is a plus.
  • Structured Literacy/Orton-Gillingham/Wilson/LETRS or similar training is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable, professional, patient and enthusiastic.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized reading instruction to elementary and/or middle school students.
  • Support foundational literacy skills, including: phonological awareness, phonics and decoding, sight-word recognition, reading fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, spelling and written language.
  • Identify areas of strength and areas needing additional support.
  • Adapt instruction to each student's learning style, skill level, and goals.
  • Use engaging, age-appropriate activities and evidence-based instructional strategies.
  • Track student progress and communicate appropriately with parents/caregivers.
  • Collaborate with speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and other professionals when appropriate.
  • Maintain brief, accurate session documentation.
  • Create a positive, encouraging environment that promotes confidence and independence.

Dyslexia/Reading Specialist– After-School

Location: Plano, Texas and McKinney, Texas
Position: Part-Time, After-School
Compensation: $25–$35/hour, based on education and experience

About the Position

We are seeking a warm, knowledgeable, and dependable Reading Tutor to provide individualized reading and literacy support to children during after-school hours.

This position is ideal for an educator, reading specialist, literacy tutor, or experienced professional who enjoys working one-on-one with children and wants to make a meaningful impact on their academic confidence and success.

Our approach is personalized and child-centered. We focus on helping each student strengthen their skills while developing confidence, independence, and a positive relationship with learning.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Reading, English, Speech-Language Pathology, or a related field
  • Experience providing reading instruction, literacy intervention, or academic tutoring
  • Experience working with elementary-aged children
  • Knowledge of evidence-based literacy instruction
  • Experience with students who have learning differences, dyslexia, language-based learning difficulties, or other academic challenges is a plus
  • Structured Literacy, Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, LETRS, or similar training is a plus
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Dependable, professional, patient, and enthusiastic

Teaching certification is preferred but not required for candidates with strong literacy and tutoring experience.

Schedule

This is an after-school position, with the primary need being weekday afternoons and early evenings.

Typical availability may fall within:

Monday–Thursday: approximately 3:00 PM–7:00 PM

Specific hours will vary based on student schedules and tutor availability.

Opportunities for additional hours during school breaks, summer, or weekends.

Compensation

$25–$35 per hour, based on education, experience, specialized training, and qualifications.

Candidates with advanced literacy training, teaching certification, reading-specialist experience, or demonstrated experience working with students with learning differences may be considered at the higher end of the range.
