Job summary

BUTLER COUNTY SCHOOLS seeks an ARI Local Reading Specialist to lead intensive professional development for elementary teachers under the Alabama Literacy Act. You will coach using the science of reading, analyze data, and model explicit instruction to raise reading levels.

The role requires a certificate, a bachelor’s degree with reading coursework, and at least two years of elementary teaching experience. This is a nine-month contract with potential for summer support.

Qualifications

• Alabama Professional Educator Certificate is required.
• Bachelor’s degree plus advanced coursework or professional development in the science of reading or equivalent training approved by the state board.
• Minimum of two years’ experience as an elementary or literacy teacher.
• Knowledge of scientifically based reading research, dyslexia interventions, and data analysis.
• Strong knowledge of the science of learning to read and early childhood education.
• Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and time management skills.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the principal to create a strategic plan for coaching to support and measure reading instruction using science of reading, baseline data, and approved assessments.
• Facilitate school-wide professional development and monitor transfer to practice.
• Model explicit, systematic science-based reading instruction with detailed explanations and guided practice.
• Coach and mentor teachers daily through planned cycles and gradually transfer responsibility to teachers.
• Lead data analysis discussions and differentiate instruction using data per student needs.
• Support teacher professional learning across areas including ESE and content knowledge, adjusting based on data.
• Prioritize activities with greatest impact on reading achievement, evidenced by coaching logs and student data.
• Monitor reading progress at least three times per year and adjust instruction based on data.
