Job description

Job Description: Communications Specialist III (Dispatcher)

The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service skills, the ability to work independently, and advanced multi-tasking skills to listen, talk, read, and type simultaneously with accuracy.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Receiving and dispatching information to DPS enforcement personnel and other agencies via two-way radio systems, telephones, teletype, computer-aided dispatch, and fax machine.
  2. Maintaining CAD documentation of all radio transmissions, accident call-in reports, teletype reports, SLED/CJIS, NLETS, and NCIC transactions.
  3. Responding to calls from citizens requesting assistance for traffic accidents, reckless drivers, road rage, disabled motorists, and other emergencies.
  4. Providing information on road and weather conditions and routing advice.
  5. Retrieving information from computer terminals for driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations, and querying NCIC for stolen vehicles, wanted persons, missing persons, and stolen guns.
  6. Directing law enforcement officers to incident scenes and maintaining communication systems.
  7. Acting as backup for the Emergency Preparedness Division in case of nuclear facility incidents.
  8. Handling after-hours calls for the Department of Transportation and Department of Revenue.

Working Conditions:

This position is office-based and may require prolonged sitting, maintaining composure in stressful situations, and working in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in a technical communications discipline is a plus.
  • Entry-level experience with voice communication systems or switchboard operations.
  • Must be a US citizen, at least 18 years old, and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass extensive background checks, including criminal, driving, drug, polygraph, and reference checks.
  • Ability to convey and interpret oral and written communication effectively.
  • Ability to type and operate a computer efficiently.
  • Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions in emergencies.
  • Must pass NCIC certification and be able to work rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

The position is critical to law enforcement operations and requires immediate response capabilities and accountability. Applicants must demonstrate independence, quick decision-making, and the ability to work irregular hours.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol operates four regional Telecommunications Centers. Applicants should specify their preferred location in the application.
