Job Description - RBL5 Laboratory Manager II (25000949)

Position: RBL5 Laboratory Manager II

Location: Med-Center for Vaccine Research (CVR) - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (25000949)

This position will serve as a senior Laboratory Manager for the Center for Vaccine Research (CVR). The incumbent will be responsible for conducting bench and animal research involving molecular and cellular biology in the Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 and 3 environments with routine work in the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL). The incumbent will be required to have good communication skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a fully productive, cooperative team member. Strict adherence to BSL2/BSL3 procedures is essential.

Responsibilities:

  1. Working with small laboratory animals (including mice and other rodents, but may include other species as well).
  2. Analyzing, preparing, and presenting data.
  3. Performing virology, microbiology, and molecular biology techniques.
  4. Maintaining tissue culture lines.
  5. Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.
  6. Leading other research personnel in performing research protocols and operating laboratory equipment.
  7. Developing and working to standard operating procedures.
  8. Maintaining equipment records within the CVR/RBL Quality System.
  9. Maintaining thorough documentation of laboratory results.
  10. Ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies within an approved budget set by conferring with faculty and other researchers concerning their research needs.

This position requires successful completion of Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins, as required by Federal regulation. This position is eligible for an RBL Premium Payment.

Job Summary:

Manages day-to-day laboratory operations while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and best practices. Works with, adapts, and installs scientific equipment in research laboratories. Develops and collaborates on routine projects and procedures. Manages inventory and equipment and performs budget functions.

Essential Functions:

Must be able to read and comprehend the English language and have normal visual ability with no hearing impairments. Must possess adequate manual dexterity to perform sensitive laboratory work including work with a BSL3/ABSL3 environment.

Physical Effort:

Position involves frequent movement to various places, occasionally involving heavy equipment and prolonged standing or sitting.
