Job description

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Mission Statement is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping and boating laws. The NCWRC employs over 700 full-time staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals.

The Land & Water Access Division plans, constructs, and manages public facilities and infrastructure necessary for agency mission fulfillment and provides statewide operations and maintenance support to the agency’s infrastructure including Fish Hatcheries, Management Depots, Education Centers, regional office locations and the administrative headquarters facility. Additionally, these sections support and manage the boating and game lands, programs including planning, preventative maintenance and the evaluation of operational efficiencies that allow optimum use at these sites. This section also manages the agency’s Wildlife Inmate Services (WISE) program. The section works in the management and compliance upkeep of waterway markings, facility management, and capital improvement programs, as well as provides maintenance to the agency’s shooting range facilities.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking applicants for theRASP Assistant Forest Manager for our Land and Water Access Division. The primary purpose of the RASP Assistant Forest Manageris prescribing and implementing forest wildlife habitat management, research, and survey activities on 42 State Game Lands consisting of approximately 435,500 acres.

  • Provide technical assistance as requested to private landowners, as well as other government agencies within an NCWRC region.
  • Monitor and direct activities to improve and maintain forest health through active timber management practices, including species restoration, conservation, reforestation, and prescribed burning.
  • General project objectives are directed at improving habitats for all endangered and game species, as well as to provide hunting opportunities for sportsmen.
  • The primary focus will be on the Holly Shelter and Stones Creek Game Land’s Red-cockaded woodpecker Recovery And Sustainment Program (RASP) project areas.

A normal Monday-Friday schedule is associated with this position, though frequent daily travel, night work, and occasional overnight travel and weekend work may be required to meet with landowners, attend meetings, coordinate activities, etc. Position is based out of Pender County, NC.Required Competencies, Work History, and Credentials must appear in the application to receive consideration during the selection process. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

  • In-depth knowledge of the principles and techniques of wildlife and forest management
  • Extensive knowledge of silvicultural requirements of managed timber species
  • Understanding of timber harvesting systems and their applications to field situations, as well as applicable regulations
  • Understanding of weather and fire behavior, as well as the ability to anticipate and adapt to changes in conditions
  • Ability to conduct timber inventories, conduct wildlife surveys and collect scientific data

Management Preferences:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew members, other staff, cooperating agencies and organizations, and the general public
  • Well-developed wildlife and plant ID skills
  • Aptitude to utilize personal computers with MS Office or other software to complete a variety of job assignments
  • Ability to construct and use databases for GPS units and associated GIS software

Special Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license for travel.
  • NC Pesticide Applicator's License endorsed for the Forest Pest Control subclass or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.
  • A NC Prescribed Burner Certification or the ability to obtain one within 24 months is required.
  • A NC Drone Pilot operator’s license (as described in 14 CFR, F, Part 107) or ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire is required

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work full shifts in all outdoor environments.

Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, supplemented by 15 hours of forestry coursework, or forestry or a related biological degree, supplemented by 15 hours of wildlife management coursework, from an appropriately accredited institution, and three years of related experience;
