Qualifications

Travel Requirements

This position requires regular travel throughout the following states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas. Candidates must be willing and able to travel as needed based on project assignments.

Job Summary

The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position involves on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks. The role is essential for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and ensuring various types of On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Jobsite Protection: Deliver jobsite protection on each assignment, ensuring error-free execution and adherence to rules. Responsibilities include radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
  • Daily Briefings: Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site, ensuring compliance with safety requirements of the railroad.
  • Documentation: Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job set-up forms for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports.
  • Equipment Handling: Handle and place signs, derails, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds as needed throughout the day.
  • Safety Training: Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
  • Communication: Maintain high-level communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.

Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Certification in RWIC On-Track Worker and Operating Rules.
  • Experience with construction reporting.
  • Background in railroad track construction maintenance and report writing.
  • Ability to document items of non-compliance.
  • Capacity to meet physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
  • Knowledge of how to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
  • Understanding of on-track safety training and qualifications required for protected roadway workers.
  • Proficiency in radio communication procedures between RWIC/EICs (Engineers in Charge) and assigned work groups.
  • Skilled in performing job briefings with all roadway workers at their work location.
  • Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
  • Competence in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, as well as standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

Required Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • A minimum of 2 years of Class 1 Railroad experience, preferably within the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department.

Preferred Education And Experience

  • 2 - 5 years of experience in railroad track maintenance.
  • Prior experience working within a railway company.
  • Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent, South On-Track Worker and Operating Rules.

Additional Qualifications, Certifications, Etc.

  • UP South On-Track Worker and Operating Rules certification.
