Job summary

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. is seeking an entry‑level railcar inspector to support our switching operation. You will inspect, prep, and clean railcars, and perform minor repairs to meet company standards while assisting with various duties across the yard.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work outdoors. Pre-employment physicals, drug testing, and background screening are required; relocation within 50 miles may be needed.

SUMMARY:

The person in this position will perform railcar inspections, prepping and cleaning on various types of railcars, equipment maintenance, switching and other duties associated with maintaining an efficient switching operation.

Candidate will also make minor repairs meeting railroad standards and specifications to the boxcars, such as welding, equipment replacement, hole patching, bottom door track, spark strip, door straightening, floor caulking and floor protrusion smoothing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Inspect the condition of the railcar while stationary.
• Clean and inspect railcars making minor repairs per company standards.
• Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• Follow all safety rules and regulations
• Welding experience a plus
• Equipment maintenance as needed
• Ability to communicate well with customers, co-workers, and supervisors

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:

• 1-year outdoor work or relatable experience a plus
• High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience
• Valid driver’s license
• At least eighteen years of age
• Entry Level position

Employment Requirements:

• Pre-employment physical, hearing, and vision medical review
• Subject to federally mandated drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment drug screening
• Background screening including criminal and motor vehicle driving history

Relocation:

Must live within 50 miles of assigned location or be willing to relocate.
