Summary Description

Cathcart Rail, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, is a leading freight rail services and transportation company. We employ nearly 1,000 employees in more than 100 locations across 33 states and operate the largest railcar services network in the industry, including 18 large railcar repair facilities and over 75 field services locations. Our rail services division also operates three short line railroads and a dozen contract switching and transloading sites.

We currently have multiple Repair Technician positions available for our Ashdown mobile repair unit. Incumbents will use mechanical skills to safely inspect and repair railcars to customer and industry specifications. Entry-level trainee positions are available, but we prefer candidates with rail industry or other industrial experience, including welding or mechanical assembly.

We offer a sign-on/retention bonus of $1,500, payable over the first 12 months, and a competitive pay scale based on skills and experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing railcar repairs in compliance with FRA and AAR interchange rules.
  • Conducting pre- and post-inspections of railcars.
  • Following all safety protocols and company policies.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Working effectively in a team.
  • Understanding railcar components and work orders.
  • Assisting in disassembly and performing repairs, including mechanical work, grinding, painting, and decaling.
  • Operating various hand and power tools, including welding equipment.
  • Completing training for equipment operation as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Rail industry or industrial experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, instructions, and blueprints.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and experience with tools.
  • Physical ability to perform outdoor, hands-on work.
  • Welding certification preferred.
  • Good communication skills and basic math skills.
  • Ability to pass physical and drug screenings.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

The role involves outdoor work in various weather conditions, working near moving mechanical parts, in high or confined spaces, and handling heavy tools and equipment. Proper body mechanics and safety procedures are essential.
