Job summary

Long Island Rail Road seeks a Car Repairman Trainee to inspect, repair, and test locomotives and passenger rail cars in accordance with Federal and MTA standards.

You will work on air-brake systems, doors, glazing, seats, trucks, and related components across sites from Manhattan to Montauk using a range of hand and power tools. A high school diploma and mechanical experience are required, with railroad maintenance preferred.

Qualifications

• Four-year high school diploma or equivalent.
• Four years of documented mechanical experience, or an equivalent combination of training and work.
• Two+ years of railroad or transit railcar maintenance experience.
• Bachelor's degree with two years mechanical experience and/or training.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and repair rolling stock components including air-brake, doors, seats, and car bodies.
• Perform air-brake tests and mechanical inspections per CFR.
• Carry out maintenance on car bodies, floors, seats, lighting, and HVAC systems.
• Welding, painting, and stenciling numbers on railroad cars and components.
• Use hand and power tools and measuring instruments.
• Work sites span from Manhattan to Montauk.
