The Michael Baker International Greater DC/MD operation has experienced significant growth over recent years. Additionally, Michael Baker continues to expand its national transit design practice. To support ongoing growth both locally and nationally, Michael Baker’s Baltimore, MD, or Washington DC office is seeking a Rail Track Engineer and Lead Client Manager. This role focuses on expanding the track engineering practice, managing technical projects, mentoring junior staff, and developing relationships with existing and new clients. The successful candidate will make technical and business decisions for the track engineering practice in the region.

In this dynamic role, you will serve as both a Rail Track Engineer and Lead Client Manager, supporting current and future projects through project management and business development. You will participate in local projects and pursuits for WMATA, MTA, Amtrak, and Class I Railroads, supported by our national Rail & Transit team. You will play a key role in driving major infrastructure projects and expanding our project portfolio.

We seek a leader who will participate in the office leadership team and collaborate with counterparts nationwide to deliver high-quality engineering services. Responsibilities include developing and implementing business strategies, working with project teams, and expanding Michael Baker’s client and project portfolio.

Responsibilities:

1. Participate actively in business development opportunities locally and nationally.
2. Build and maintain relationships with clients, consultants, and industry professionals.
3. Design, direct, and manage rail-related components of passenger, freight, and commuter rail projects.
4. Develop and oversee the design of track alignments, including special track work such as turnouts, crossovers, and diamond crossings.
5. Prepare and direct detailed engineering plans using industry-standard software.
6. Contribute to the development and review of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for rail projects.
7. Lead and mentor junior staff on various project tasks within multidisciplinary teams.
8. Conduct engineering investigations, including feasibility and risk analysis studies.
9. Perform track and site inspections during construction and maintenance to ensure compliance with FRA, AREMA, and other regulations.
10. Coordinate with multiple disciplines to ensure conformance to design standards and codes.
11. Assist in developing the rail components of large multi-disciplinary project pursuits.
12. Work flexibly, including remote work options based on experience level.

Professional Requirements:

1. Bachelor’s degree in civil, transportation, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
2. 8-10+ years of experience on various rail projects.
3. PE license is required; NCEES registration is a plus.
4. Experience with Class I Railroad design is a plus.
5. Experience with transit agencies is a plus.
6. Thorough knowledge of and experience applying AREMA standards.
7. Strong client management skills and ability to develop relationships.
8. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
9. Strong work ethic and integrity.
10. Ability to work independently and in teams.
