POSITION SUMMARY:

Asphalt Express is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Rail Terminal Operator to support daily rail terminal operations. This position is responsible for loading, unloading, and transloading railcars; assisting with railcar switching and movement; connecting and disconnecting steam lines; and accurately entering operational and safety information into company systems.

The ideal candidate has basic computer skills, strong attention to detail, and experience working with railcars, liquid asphalt, fuel oils, crude oil, petroleum products, or steam boiler systems.

JOB DUTIES & REQUIREMENTS:

• Safely perform the loading, unloading, and transloading of railcars.
• Assist with railcar switching, movement, spotting, coupling, uncoupling, and securement.
• Connect and disconnect steam lines to railcars using established operating and safety procedures.
• Inspect railcars, hoses, valves, fittings, steam lines, and other equipment before and during operations.
• Monitor product transfers to ensure materials are handled safely and efficiently.
• Enter required information into computer systems for the release and tracking of railcars.
• Complete and submit electronic safety reports accurately and on time.
• Enter and maintain accurate bill of lading (BOL) information.
• Verify railcar numbers, product information, shipping documents, seals, and other required records.
• Communicate with supervisors, coworkers, drivers, railroad personnel, and customers to coordinate terminal activities.
• Follow all company policies, terminal procedures, customer requirements, and applicable Federal Railroad Administration regulations.
• Immediately report spills, leaks, injuries, incidents, equipment damage, and unsafe working conditions to management.
• Assist with spill prevention, containment, cleanup, and emergency-response activities when required.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe terminal work areas.
• Perform routine inspections and assist with basic maintenance and troubleshooting of terminal equipment.
• Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, training programs, and required operational certifications.
• Safely operate company vehicles and maintain eligibility to drive company equipment.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
• Must have a valid driver’s license with positive driving history.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

KNOWLEDGE:

• Basic knowledge of standard computer software and normal computer operations.
• Understanding of safe railcar loading, unloading, and transloading procedures.
• Familiarity with railcar movement, switching, spotting, and securement practices.
• Knowledge of liquid asphalt, fuel oils, crude oil, petroleum products or similar materials is preferred.
• Familiarity with Federal Railroad Administration regulations and safe rail operating practices is preferred.
• Knowledge of steam boilers, steam systems, and steam-line operations is preferred.
• Understanding of bills of lading, shipping documents, and railcar-release procedures.
• Knowledge of workplace safety requirements, spill prevention, and emergency-response procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Basic computer skills and the ability to learn company software systems required.
• Previous railcar movement, switching, or handling experience preferred.
• Previous experience loading, unloading, or transloading liquid asphalt, fuel oils, crude oil, petroleum products, or similar materials preferred.
• Previous experience with steam boilers or steam systems is a plus.
• FRA knowledge or previous experience working under FRA requirements is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to complete data-entry tasks accurately.
• Ability to read and understand bills of lading, safety procedures, operating instructions, and product documentation.
• Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Dependable, self-motivated, and safety-focused work ethic.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an industrial environment.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and varying shifts as needed.
• Valid driver’s license required.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:

• Ability to climb, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, stretch, push, pull, twist, and stand for extended periods.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly.
• Ability to climb stairs, ladders, railcars, loading platforms, and elevated terminal structures.
• Comfortable working at heights and around moving rail equipment.
• Ability to connect, disconnect, lift, and position hoses, fittings, and steam lines.
• Ability to work around liquid asphalt, fuel oils, crude oil, petroleum products, steam systems, and other industrial materials.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
• Ability to safely operate hand tools and other equipment required for terminal operations.
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, protective clothing, and work boots.
