Job summary

Railserve, a Marmon Holdings company, is seeking a Tamper Operator to operate rail-mounted tamping machines, align and compact ballast, and ensure track geometry and safety standards. This outdoor role requires travel to multiple job sites, with extensive field work and varying schedules.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED, 1–2 years in railroad maintenance, a valid driver's license, and FRA or company-specific certification.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1–2 years of railroad maintenance or rail-bound machinery experience.
• Valid driver's license; CDL may be required depending on jurisdiction.
• Certification for railway equipment operation (FRA-compliant or company-specific).
• Knowledge of AREMA and FRA regulations; track geometry basics.
• Strong safety awareness and ability to work outdoors in all conditions.

Responsibilities

• Operate rail-mounted tampers to align, level, and compact ballast under tracks.
• Follow track maintenance schedules and procedures under supervision.
• Read and interpret track diagrams, work orders and machine settings.
• Conduct routine pre-operation inspections and basic maintenance on tamping equipment.
• Collaborate with Track Supervisor and other MOW personnel; report unsafe conditions.
