Job summary

United States Sugar Corporation is seeking a Signal Maintainer (Signalman) in SOUTH CENTRAL FLORIDA EXPRESS to inspect, test, and repair railroad signal systems and grade crossing devices, ensuring safe train movement. The role requires reading schematics, performing preventative maintenance, and responding to after-hours outages, with a strong emphasis on safety and accurate record-keeping.

You will work with dispatchers and crews, comply with FRA rules, and travel as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Signal training completion preferred; ability to complete training within 90 days of hire date.
• Experience maintaining railroad signal systems preferred.
• Knowledge of electrical circuits, electronics, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Ability to obtain any required FRA or company certifications.
• Familiarity with signal relays, switch machines, crossing gates, batteries, and signal control systems.
• Strong safety mindset and attention to detail.
• Good communication and ability to work in a team.
• Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, test, maintain, and repair railroad signal systems and highway grade crossing warning devices.
• Diagnose electrical, electronic, and mechanical failures using appropriate testing equipment.
• Install new signal equipment, wiring, relays, switch machines, batteries, and control systems.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on signal systems.
• Respond to emergency signal failures, including after-hours and weekend callouts.
• Read and interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, circuit plans, and technical manuals.
• Test signal functionality following repairs or installations to ensure compliance with FRA and company standards.
• Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and testing records.
• Coordinate with dispatchers, train crews, engineering personnel, and contractors during maintenance activities.
• Follow all operating rules, safety regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and roadway worker protection requirements.
• Travel throughout the railroad system as needed.
