Job summary

Amtrak is seeking qualified candidates to consistently and safely operate locomotives and trains in alignment with federal regulations and corporate policies. The role requires operating equipment across a 24/7 transportation environment, maintaining alertness and clear communication with fellow crew members and other personnel responsible for safe train movement.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, and preferred candidates have some college or vocational training with

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED required.
  • Some work experience demonstrates alertness, awareness and vigilance with clear verbal communication.
  • If a driver's license is held, provide driving record from the issuing state and any other states within 60 months; must be clean of violations.
  • Must sign release of records for previous railroad employment; FRA regs require records be void of violations in past 60 months.
  • Engineer Training program: 8–10 weeks classroom and field work at Amtrak Training Center in Wilmington, DE; then on-the-job training; paid at trainee rate until certification as Class 1 Train Service Engineer.
  • Class 1 Train Service Engineers are paid per the applicable agreement.
  • Subjects to periodic medical exams and random drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Meet FRA vision, color vision, and hearing criteria.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently and safely operate locomotives and trains in compliance with federal regulations and corporate policies.
  • Operate equipment during varying work hours within a 24/7 transportation environment maintaining alertness, situational awareness and vigilance.
  • Think and function independently and use clear verbal communication with crew and other personnel responsible for safe train movement.
