Summary

The X-Ray Technician performs digital X‑ray studies on patients per the orders placed by providers. The X-Ray Technician is a multi-skilled clinical professional who works within the scope of practice to assist in patient care under the direction of the provider.

Essential Job Functions

• Safely performs provider‑ordered radiographic examinations, including proper patient positioning, immobilization, and utilization of appropriate radiation protection.
• Sets up and adjusts supportive and immobilization equipment and devices as required by individual cases, positioning and handling patients with a high degree of safety and professionalism.
• Accurately documents patient encounters within Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
• Determines and selects proper electronic and technical factors which safeguard the patient, X‑ray tube, and equipment.
• Maintains clinical and administrative skills to meet patient care and daily operational needs; collects patient specimens and runs point‑of‑care lab tests; may travel to other facilities or adjust work hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the manager.
• Directs and practices sterile technique to prevent cross‑contamination of disease.
• Reports immediately any malfunction, necessary adjustments, or repairs of equipment to supervisor.
• Other duties include, but are not limited to, ordering supplies, lab and diagnostic tests, disposing of contaminated supplies, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, check‑in/check‑out, and performing scribing duties as needed.

Licensing / Certification

• Certification and Registration with ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) – required.
• State Licensure – preferred (required if performed in Virginia).
• BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association – required (must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care).

Education

Associate's degree from an ARRT‑accredited institute – preferred.

Experience

• 1 year experience in radiation safety and patient care – preferred.
• Experience with Radiology Information System – preferred.

Training

• EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) – preferred.
• Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) – preferred.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Medical Terminology and the ability to use standard office equipment – required.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, and ability to collaborate with patients, families, and teams within a high‑volume environment – preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask without prior instruction or direction – preferred.
• Knowledge to provide age‑appropriate care for patients served on assigned unit.
• Knowledge of principles of growth and development across the lifespan and ability to assess data reflective of patient status and interpret information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age, specific needs, and to provide care as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.

Working Conditions

• Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
• General office environment – may be exposed to physical altercations, verbal abuse, hazardous substances or body fluids, human blood and other potentially infectious materials.
• Exposure to adverse weather conditions; cold, hot, dust, wind, etc.; and periods of constant interruptions.
• Required to car travel to off‑site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
• Universal precautions, use of personal protective equipment and devices, and adherence to infection control policies.

Physical Requirements

• Manual dexterity (eye/hand coordination), depth perception, use of latex gloves, reach above shoulder, movement with weight of patients, and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
• Perform shift work; exposure to dust/fumes, repetitive arm/hand movements, finger dexterity, exposure to X‑ray/em electromagnetic energy, color vision, acuity – far and near.

Skills

• Patient‑centered care, monitoring patient conditions during examination, recording medical histories.
• Working within an interdisciplinary team, attention to detail, critical thinking, communication with patients, conflict resolution, active listening, relationship building.
