Job Duties
- Monitors, orders and completes inventory for all lab supplies, as assigned.
- Rooms and prepares patient for examination, as applicable. This includes histories, vitals, reason for visit, presenting symptoms and current medication list.
- Assists in orientation and training of students and new employees in phlebotomy and/or lab procedures and processes.
- Performs quality assurance checks and maintains documentation in accordance with CLIA guidelines as applicable.
- Demonstrates competency in use of all lab equipment/machines including performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and completing proficiency testing.
- Documents all lab results in accordance with clinic procedures and distributes reports to appropriate physician staff.
- Performs basic lab tests according to accepted procedures. This includes ensuring test requests contain required information and correspond with correct specimens.
- Follows specimen collection, labeling and handling procedures to include verifying patients' names before collecting specimens.
- Adheres to all phlebotomy protocols by selecting and performing the appropriate phlebotomy procedures for pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
- Initiates applicable incident reports by the end of the shift and reports incomplete and incorrect examinations to ensure the proper patient charge and continuity of patient care.
- Reviews each exam for technical accuracy.
- Identifies anatomical orientation and ensures proper film identification on all images.
- Prepares and orders images and obtains previous films by use of the PACS-Isite system.
- Identifies each patient and reviews each patient's requisition for consistency of examination ordered with clinical diagnosis.
- Utilizes EPIC system's Admissions and Radiology Module to register patients, close orders, enter repeat test information and where applicable, order tests.
Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
Department Specific Duties
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of all general radiographer policies and procedures. Demonstrated competence with film and digital processing. Ability to perform venipuncture and laboratory procedures up to and including moderately complex labs.
Professional ExperienceGeneral diagnostic x-ray experience preferred. Laboratory experience, to include venipuncture and performing moderately complex laboratory procedures preferred.
EducationCurrent American Registry of Radiologist Technician Certification Required. Associates degree in radiological technology preferred.
Licensure, Certification, RegistrationIowa Permit to Practice Radiography required. Registration with the American Academy of Radiological Technologists (ARRT) required. CPR certification required. Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
Visual AcuityWork requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Ability to read pertinent printed material and distinguish colors. Ability to include inspection during patient assessment. Ability to accurately read measurements on patient related equipment—some examples include: thermometers, mechanical gauges, glucometers, IV pumps, and computer monitor displays. Work requires analyzing data and figures, use of computer terminal and extensive reading. Worker must be able to visually assess patients’ safety needs. Normal visual acuity required to maintain accuracy and neatness of work. Preparing and reading written documentation, use of computer. Peripheral vision.

Adaptability to dealing with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Able to communicate with people regarding giving and receiving of instructions. Adaptability to changing priorities.
