Job description

Travel Radiology Technician

Location: Waterloo, Iowa

Pay Rate: $49.10 - $51.10 per hour

Position Overview

Our client, an established healthcare organization, is seeking a certified Radiologic Technologist for an onsite, 90-day contract engagement in Waterloo, Iowa. The role supports a busy diagnostic imaging department serving inpatient, outpatient, and emergency populations.

This position is well suited to a technologist who takes pride in image quality, patient safety, and efficient department flow. Whether you are pursuing your next permanent role or an employed professional adding experience across health systems, this engagement offers steady, varied volume and a clearly defined commitment.

Key Responsibilities

You will perform diagnostic radiographic examinations across a full range of anatomical areas, positioning patients accurately, selecting appropriate technical factors, and producing images that meet the department's diagnostic quality standards on the first attempt wherever possible.

Radiation safety is a constant responsibility. You will apply ALARA principles rigorously, use shielding and collimation appropriately, verify pregnancy status per protocol, and monitor your own dosimetry, protecting patients, colleagues, and yourself throughout every procedure.

You will support portable and operating room imaging as required, assist radiologists with fluoroscopic and contrast studies, prepare and administer contrast media within scope and protocol, and monitor patients for adverse reactions.

You will verify orders and patient identity, explain procedures clearly to reduce anxiety, process and transmit images through PACS, maintain accurate records in the radiology information system, perform routine equipment quality-control checks, and report equipment faults promptly.

You will manage patient flow through the imaging department efficiently, coordinating with nursing units, the emergency department, and scheduling staff to sequence examinations sensibly and keep wait times reasonable. You will also handle patient transport and transfer safely, using appropriate lifting aids and assistance for patients with mobility limitations, and adapt technique for trauma, pediatric, bariatric, and critically ill patients.

Requirements

ARRT certification and registration in Radiography are required, along with any state credential required to practice in Iowa. Graduation from an accredited radiologic technology program is required.

Prior experience performing diagnostic radiography in a hospital or clinical setting is required, along with current BLS certification. You must be competent with PACS and radiology information systems.

You must demonstrate strong positioning skills, sound judgment about image quality and repeat criteria, and the physical capability to assist with patient transfers and to operate portable equipment. Reliable attendance and clear communication with radiologists, nursing staff, and patients are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional ARRT credentials in CT, mammography, or MRI are preferred, and cross-training potential is valued. Trauma or emergency department imaging experience is viewed favorably.

Experience with operating room and C-arm fluoroscopy, familiarity with multiple PACS platforms, and prior contract or travel technologist experience are all advantageous.

Willingness to work evening, night, weekend, or on‑call rotations is valued, as departments of this size cover imaging around the clock. Experience with digital radiography and computed radiography systems, comfort with portable imaging on nursing units and in the ICU, and a track record of low repeat rates all strengthen an application.

Compensation and Benefits

This engagement pays an hourly rate in the range of $49.10 to $51.10, based on experience and credentials held, across a 90-day contract with a defined end date.

You will work in a well‑equipped imaging department alongside experienced radiologists and technologists, gaining exposure to a broad case mix. The defined engagement length supports planning, and extension or additional assignments may be available subject to performance and organizational need.

This is a contract engagement placed through our recruiting team. We work closely with our contract professionals throughout the assignment, from onboarding and first‑week check‑ins through to end‑of‑contract planning, and we actively look for the next opportunity for people who deliver well. Many of our contract placements lead to extensions, repeat assignments, or permanent conversion.

We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. Reasonable accommodations are available during the application and interview process on request.
