Summary

The Radiology Technologist operates radiographic equipment to produce diagnostic radiographs of the body as directed by the ER Physician and Radiologist protocol. The technologist positions the patient and examination table to obtain optimum views, practices radiation safety techniques with the ALARA principle, uses beam‑restrictive devices and patient shielding, and manages exposure factors for maximum radiation protection. The technologist also operates CT scan equipment, administers and consents for IV and oral contrast, and ensures accurate documentation in the patient chart. This role prioritizes patient safety and diagnostic quality.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Maintains awareness of all NEC departmental and operational policies.

  • Assists in equipment maintenance, cleaning, and QA procedures.

  • Handles specimen collection, labeling, processing, and lab workflow.

  • Performs lab testing when trained, approved, and competency verified.

  • Explains procedures and exams’ benefits and risks to patients.

  • Prepares patients for examination, including contrast, IV placement, and lab checks.

  • Completes contrast, extravasations, pregnancy, and other pre‑exam forms.

  • Maintains safety precautions to minimize radiation exposure to patients, colleagues, and self.

  • Updates knowledge of diagnostic radiology and CT procedures.

  • Applies fundamental anatomy and physiology principles to obtain diagnostic quality images.

  • Provides basic troubleshooting for radiology/CT equipment and minor repairs.

  • Utilizes all radiological and lab equipment in the ER.

  • Uses proper body mechanics when moving/lifting patients and equipment to prevent injury.

  • Applies radiology safety principles in positioning tasks.

  • Recognizes own limitations and seeks guidance when needed.

  • Communicates issues or concerns about departmental activities to appropriate personnel.

  • Provides safe transportation of patients to and from the patient care unit.

  • Reiterates awareness of all NEC departmental and operational policies.


Qualifications


  • Graduate of an accredited radiologic technology program.

  • At least 1 year of radiologic and CT imaging experience.


Language/Math/Reasoning Ability


  • Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

  • Write simple correspondence.

  • Present information one‑on‑one and to small groups to customers, clients, and staff.

  • Perform basic arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Compute rates, ratios, percentages, and interpret bar graphs.

  • Apply common sense to follow written, oral, or diagram instructions and solve problems with several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Certificates & Licenses


  • Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

  • Current state licensure (e.g., Texas, Colorado, Rhode Island as required).

  • Current Basic Life‑Support (BCLS) certification.

  • CT certification: ARRT (CT) with state‑specific requirements for Texas, Colorado, Rhode Island.
