Job summary

Consolidated Nuclear Security is seeking a Radiological Control Technician at the Oak Ridge, TN site. You will monitor personnel and areas for radiological exposures, select monitoring equipment, and conduct surveys under supervision, while supporting training and RADCON readiness.

The role requires a DOE RCT CORE certification or equivalent, and a background in radiological protection with strong math and data handling capabilities.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required with radiological protection experience.
• Associate's degree in a science/technical field plus 2 years of Radiological Protection/ Radiography experience.
• Bachelor's or higher in science/technical field plus 2 years of Radiological Protection/Radiography experience.
• Master's degree in science/technical field plus 2 years of Radiological Protection/Radiography experience.
• PhD in science/technical field plus 2 years of Radiological Protection/Radiography experience.

Responsibilities

• Monitor personnel, work areas, and items leaving radiological areas to control exposures.
• Determine monitoring devices, anti-contamination clothing, and stay times for radiological workers.
• Perform field observations and area contamination/radiation surveys in assigned areas.
• Assist in training less experienced RCTs when directed.
• Participate in work planning and as an Emergency Response RADCON team member.

What You'll Do

Field Operations Radiological Control Technicians:

• Under general supervision, performs monitoring of personnel, work areas, and items leaving radiological areas for the control of exposures from internal and external sources.
• When directed, assumes responsibility for assigned area in the absence of the Radiological Control Technician (RCT) Lead.
• Frequently interacts with Operations personnel of area assigned; i.e., initial pre-shift communication to go over activities scheduled for the day/week.
• Determines appropriate personnel monitoring devices, anti-contamination clothing (including respiratory protection), and stay times for radiological workers working with sources of radiation.
• Observes radiological work processes and performs Field Observations and area contamination and radiation surveys from area assigned.
• When directed, assist in the training of less experienced RCTs.
• Actively participates in the planning for work overage.
• Participate as an Emergency Response Organization RADCON team member.

• Must understand the basic nature of the types of radiation.
• Must be knowledgeable and trained in principles, methods, and mechanics of monitoring and sampling of radiological hazards.
• Requires the ability to recognize and characterize problems related to standards and limits, plan investigative action, and define corrective measures.
• In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., High School diploma; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).

• Ability to wear a respirator.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
