Job description

Performs a variety of medical imaging procedures and is responsible for patient safety protocols. Functions as the first line interface with the customers in the successful accomplishment of their imaging needs. Participates in call rotation for computed tomography/ultrasound. Participates in CQI activities.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing treatment and use of equipment to minimize the hazards of electric shock, burns and extraneous radiation to patients.
  • Explains procedures to patient satisfaction regarding discharge and/or home care.
  • Uses two patient identifiers before performing any procedure.
  • Responsible for safe handling of equipment and films.
  • Instructs and prepares patients for roentgenographic and fluoroscopic films.
  • Selects appropriate equipment to use for procedures.
  • Determines the most suitable anatomical posture and positions and shields patients accordingly.
  • Able to assess patient pain interfering with procedures; makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Makes special radiographic examinations requiring special equipment and procedures such as: intravenous pyelograms, intravenous cholangiograms, bronchograms, mammograms, hysterosalpingograms, tomograms, cholangiography, arthrograms, myelograms and hip pinning’s in surgery.
  • Programs portable or stationary x-ray machines and makes radiograms for a variety of examinations.
  • Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining basic records, reports, and maintaining files.
  • Assists in training of students and ancillary personnel.
  • Takes x-ray, CAT, Ultrasound and Angio calls according to the monthly schedule after the closing of the regular department hours.
  • Interacts professionally with patients/family.
  • Completes all work before clocking out and leaving. This includes checking with nurses’ stations.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Basic computer skills.
  • High school graduate.
  • Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology, either college affiliated or hospital trained.
  • Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
  • Certified by the State of Texas to practice and administer radiation.
  • Current BLS certification.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift patients with assistance from other personnel.
