Your job is more than a job

You knew from your first day as a rad tech that you had a rare ability to navigate in the “tech” meets “touch” world of patient care. As a Lead Xray Technologist, you use independent judgment and critical thinking to successfully complete diagnostic imaging procedures. Overseeing and scheduling radiology technologists and ancillary personnel, you ensure smooth patient flow, staffing, equipment maintenance, and JCAHO compliance.

And while you demonstrate your keen understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology and your ability to utilize x-ray and fluoroscopy equipment, you combine the science of imaging and the art of caring. That’s what we love about you.

Your Everyday

  1. Oversee and demonstrate high technical proficiency, skills and knowledge in use of all x-ray equipment and performance of all x-ray protocols and procedures.
  2. Produce high quality scans of the requested anatomical part within the appropriate length of time for the procedure type.
  3. Demonstrate a satisfactory working knowledge of PACS/RIS.
  4. Review scans with the Radiologist and discuss anatomical detail and areas of abnormalities.
  5. Accomplish all positions that are related to each procedure, apply immobilization devices for patient comfort, and select proper technique.
  6. Perform calibration tests to satisfy density factors and to meet correct specifications prior to utilization.
  7. Perform proper warming up procedures in a manner that will not result in damage to equipment.
  8. Understand and apply radiation protection procedures daily to eliminate excessive radiation to the patient and other individuals in the room using borders on all images and collimation devices to eliminate excessive radiation.
  9. Assist in delivery of care by the physician, arming the syringe, injecting contrast media without error, and identifying malfunctions and corrective action.
  10. Recognize life threatening situations and act accordingly to assist members of the health care team.
  11. Transport patients as necessary and transfer patients to the table.
  12. Assist and evaluate students and support personnel in their activities to ensure proper care is provided without deficiencies in the film quality or complaints.
  13. Seek assistance for complex or non-routine learning needs from an appropriate authority.
  14. Document procedures in the case event log ensuring appropriate chronology of events and a complete record of all supplies utilized.
  15. Ensure films are properly identified in accordance with the department policy and documented in a timely fashion with pertinent information relative to the patient's care and charges.
  16. Inspect, maintain, and clean all equipment and ensure equipment is properly secured so as not to produce loss or damage while not in use.
  17. Provide daily assignments of technologists, monthly call schedule, and instruction and training of new staff.
  18. Ensure that the director is informed of any situation that may produce staff, patient, or physician complaints.
  19. Document job injuries are documented.
  20. Work closely with the department’s director to formulate protocols and charges on any new procedure.
