Job Description

Provides imaging services at a Level I Trauma hospital institution under general direction of the Operations and Technical Managers. This individual performs a variety of patient contact duties related to the operation of radiologic equipment to make clinical diagnostic X-ray images as directed by a physician. Explains safety protocols and routine diagnostic procedures to patients. The individual must have the capability of performing routine diagnostic procedures efficiently, accurately, utilizing various radiographic equipment such as fluoroscopic, portable, and diagnostic equipment as related to the area.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Upholds and follows the Standards of Behavior Policy
  • Scheduled rotations in all areas of radiography including Outpatient, Inpatient, OR and Fluoroscopy procedures.
  • Conduct equipment system warm-up and quality assurance procedures per established guidelines to ensure safe and effective equipment operation
  • Follow Radiology Patient Identification Policy
  • Correctly interpret exam requests making sure history conforms to exam requested
  • Position and follow Emergency, Inpatient and Outpatient exam protocols for patients of all ages, level of acuity, and body habitus
  • Instruct patients regarding procedures while remaining cognizant of patient’s condition
  • Utilize immobilization and supportive devices to obtain the desired radiographic positions and ensure patient safety
  • Select radiographic exposure factors for procedures using the principle of ALARA
  • Maintain a high level of image quality when archiving exams to PACS to ensure all images are of the correct patient, correct exam, correct labeling, positioning, and orientation
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of Radiation Safety, and Hospital and Departmental Policies
  • Maintain knowledge of the location of emergency equipment, code carts, and the procedures necessary to alert the Code Team and Rapid Response Team
  • Mentor imaging students and new employees following the MGH mission statement
Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Required
  • Knowledge of anatomy, cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of the principles of radiation physics
  • Knowledge of radiographic positioning and radiographic equipment
  • Knowledge of radiation safety and hospital and departmental policies
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Maintain inventory of exam room, keep a clean and safe working environment.
  • Physical ability to perform all job functions
  • Computer skills for effective patient care and communication
  • Ability to provide compassionate care to patients and family
  • Recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately, including knowledge of emergency code procedures and equipment
  • Read and write English proficiently
  • Assess patient-specific data relative to age-specific needs and provide appropriate care
  • Uphold ethical and professional standards
Qualifications

Successful completion of an accredited school of Radiologic Technology, ARRT Certification, and Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist License required. BLS required. Experience is preferred.
