Job summary

MyMichigan Health is seeking a Radiologic Technologist to accurately apply ionizing radiation for diagnostic imaging and to perform radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures with attention to minimizing patient exposure.

The role requires an Associate Degree in Radiologic Technology, ARRT registration or eligibility within 1 year of hire, and Basic Life Support. Strong anatomy knowledge, positioning skills, and radiation safety are essential for success in this on-site Alpena, MI role.

Qualifications

  • One year of clinical radiography experience preferred.
  • Associates degree in radiologic technology required or equivalent.
  • ARRT registration or registry-eligible within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures with correct ionizing radiation application for diagnosis.
  • Positions patient and equipment to clearly demonstrate exam areas, requiring strong anatomy knowledge.
  • Provides radiation protection for patient and staff per safety standards.
  • Adjusts technical factors using independent judgment and knowledge of anatomy and disease effects on radiographs.
  • Assists radiologist with sterile procedures (e.g., biopsies) as needed.
  • Performs surgical and portable radiographic procedures; may assist with contrast media administration and catheterizations.
  • Maintains sterile technique and stays current with continuing education and department meetings.
  • Initiates requisitions, manages charges, and acknowledges exams via the computer.
  • Recognizes and reports radiographic equipment malfunctions.

Job description

Summary

This position accurately applies ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis, including skills required in performing a variety of technical procedures, resulting in the highest quality diagnostic radiograph, with the least amount of radiation exposure to the patient.

Responsibilities
  • (25%)* Performs radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures utilizing accurate application of ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis.
  • (25%)* Positions patient and equipment appropriately to accurately demonstrate the area being examined, requiring extensive anatomic positioning skills.
  • (25%)* Provides appropriate radiation protection for patient and staff during radiation exposures according to prescribed safety standards.
  • (25%)* Adjusts technical factors to provide appropriate exposure by use of independent judgment, knowledge of human anatomy, effect of disease on the radiograph and the principles of radiation as well as the specific operation of all radiologic equipment within the department.
  • OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Assists radiologist as needed in performance of sterile procedures, i.e., biopsies, myelograms, etc.
    • Performs surgical and portable radiographic procedures as assigned.
    • Performs nursing procedures, including the preparation and administration of various forms of radiologic contrast media and medications, and catheterizations. Has knowledge to readily identify and treat allergic reactions to contrast media. Practices sterile technique.
    • Maintains professional acumen through active association with professional organizations. Shows evidence of continuing education in radiography as necessary to remain current with profession. Attends in-service educational programs and departmental meetings.
    • Initiates requisitions, adds or modifies charges, acknowledges exams, requiring the use of the computer.
    • Ability to recognize and report malfunction of radiographic equipment appropriately.
    • All other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures
  • Required: ARRT: Reg Radiologic Technologist
  • Equivalent Experience: ARRT registry or registry eligible required within 1 year of hire. One (1) year clinical experience as normally acquired through AMA approved school of radiologic technology required.
  • Required: BLS: Basic Life Support
  • Within 1 month of hire or transfer

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

  • One (1) year clinical experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Radiology Information System (RIS) and HIS preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures as evidenced by observation, documentation and peer feedback for the following: Neonate/Infant, Toddler, Child, Adolescent, Adult and Later Adult.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
