Description

The Radiographer – CT performs computed tomography and related procedures to demonstrate sectional anatomic images for interpretation by or at the request of a licensed practitioner. Provides appropriate patient care and recognizes patient’s conditions essential for successful completion of the procedures. Services are provided in accordance with industry standards, department protocols, and hospital policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Performs computed tomography procedures according to set protocols established by radiologists.
- Evaluates the request for the procedure and assesses the patient to determine the appropriate protocol and method of application.
- Appropriately employs imaging systems, accessory devices, and patient positioning techniques to generate quality images.
- Cares for the patient throughout the procedure according to department and hospital standards of patient care, age-specific sensitivities, and “patients first” guidelines.
- Participates in lifting and transporting patients to and from imaging devices.
- Evaluates the resultant images in comparison with industry standards and takes corrective action if needed. Refers to appropriate reference materials for clarification when needed.
- Provides patient education in the form of written material and/or verbal explanation prior to, during, and subsequent to the procedure to reduce anxiety and enhance comfort and tolerance.
- Performs imaging procedures in accordance with safe radiation safety practices as determined by the Illinois Emergency Management Administration to limit radiation exposure.
- Performs preliminary interpretation by applying independent judgment, subsequently customizing the procedure accordingly, and uses this knowledge to expedite intervention by the radiologist if necessary.
- Notifies physicians of changes in patient condition or unique imaging characteristics as required.
- Maintains flexibility to accommodate daily schedule and high productivity levels.
- Collaborates with Resource Coordinators and Technical Coordinators to learn and become proficient in new procedures and software updates.
Additional Functions
- Documents imaging procedures manually and/or electronically for correct billing, patient, and film file tracking.
- Sends acquired images to PACS system correctly, using appropriate accession numbers.
- Monitors supply stock in imaging rooms, ensures availability, and maintains a clean environment.
- Reports equipment failures or irregularities promptly.
- Distributes outpatient surveys to patients for self-evaluation and improving patient experience.
Quality Management Responsibilities
- Provides high-quality imaging services with optimal productivity and customer service.
- Collects data to support quality measurement and improvement.
- Participates in process improvement initiatives.
- Identifies quality issues proactively and reports to management.
- Ensures effective interdepartmental interactions to maintain continuity of care.
- Serves as a role model for new radiographers.
- Participates in and eventually leads department in-service programs.
- Maintains competencies and continuing education as required.
Qualifications
Required:
- Graduation from an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
- Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Radiologic Technology, Applied Science, Radiography OR Certificate of Completion, Radiography Program (hospital-sponsored).
- Certification in Radiography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT).
- Active license with Illinois Emergency Management Department of Nuclear Safety.
- License ARRT Post Primary CT Certification required within 1 year of start date.
- CPR Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA).
