Job summary

The Minnesota Department of Transportation seeks a qualified Radio Engineer 1 to provide system engineering support for the ARMER radio backbone in the Metro Region. You will develop implementation plans and documentation, perform repairs, updates and maintenance on existing systems, and assist with expansions.

Join a team delivering critical public safety communications and ensuring reliable services for MnDOT and partner agencies. Prior ARMER and radio engineering experience is required.

This position will provide system engineering support to the MnDOT ARMER public safety radio system backbone in the Metro Region. To develop implementation plans and process documentation, to provide repairs, updates, and maintenance support of existing systems and expansion of new integrated systems. This position also provides technical expertise in testing and evaluation services to State of Minnesota agencies, local area ARMER system partner agencies, and other contracted agencies.

The Responsibilities Include

• Provide system engineering and technical support for the regional ARMER master site office (MSO).
• Support and test system dispatch console equipment.
• Maintain 800MHz system controllers, microwave systems, communications equipment, and other infrastructure equipment.
• Provide customer support during system upgrades and/or expansions.
• Make approved major alterations and/or modifications to the existing system upon request of OSRC Engineering.

Minimum Qualifications

• FCC Radio Telephone License or be an APCO/NABER certified technician at time of hire.
• Valid Class “D” driver’s license.
• Two or more years of recent advanced technical working experience (within the last four years) supporting a regional or large-scale radio communications system with responsibility for installation, repair, and implementation of a variety of radio communications equipment.
• Knowledge of microprocessors, digital, analog, and electromechanical technology.
• Knowledge of computers and computer peripheral equipment.
• Knowledge of software development process.
• Knowledge of radio communication procedures and ability to operate communication equipment and peripheral equipment. (i.e., telephone, two-way radio, and computer).
• Knowledge and application of record keeping requirements and ability to keep records and complete reports.

Preferred Qualification

• Knowledge and experience relating to the installation, maintenance, repair, and programming of wide area digital trunked radio communications systems, large scale/high-capacity digital microwave radio systems, RF base stations, audio/data multiplexing equipment, digital and analog recording equipment, basic computer network development and configuration.
• Skills in troubleshooting techniques, soldering, and handling sensitive electronic equipment and parts as well as a mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
• Experience and knowledge of local and wide area radio communications networks to include switches, routers and servers.
