Job summary

Summary

The Radiation Therapist provides safe and effective delivery of radiation treatment as prescribed by the physicians and documents patient’s daily statistical information.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., PRN, as needed. No weekends, evenings, or holidays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates the linear accelerator and delivers planned courses of radiation therapy with minimal supervision, monitoring delivery accuracy.
  • Positions patients according to simulator setup instructions and uses special devices when applicable.
  • Reports any unusual reactions or patient concerns to the physician and withholds treatment if required.
  • Checks the daily treatment record for special instructions or procedural changes (e.g., modifies treatment if a port film is rejected).
  • Thoroughly educates patients and/or family on the radiation therapy procedures they will receive.
  • Performs a “Time Out” to confirm the correct patient is being treated.
  • Performs a “Chart Check” before any new treatment fields, verifying approved prescription and accurate documentation.
  • Captures photographs of setups when applicable and documents them in Aria.
  • Maintains the daily treatment schedule to ensure efficient patient flow.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel for transportation arrangements when necessary.
  • Verifies billing daily to ensure correct physician and code transmission.
  • Performs simulation in accordance with simulation policy and physician instructions.
  • Executes imaging procedures prescribed by the physician, making adjustments as directed or if a film is rejected.
  • Conducts daily quality assurance checks on the machine each morning, records parameters, and notifies physics if any are out of range.
  • Follows all radiation safety measures for patient and personnel as specified by the radiation safety officer.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel when equipment needs repair or supplies run low.
  • Adheres to all health‑care privacy and safety rules and Dayton Physicians Core Values.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Not applicable.

Required Education and/ or Experience

High school diploma, graduation from an AMA‑approved radiation therapy program, current Ohio Department of Health radiologic license, current ARRT license, and CPR certification. Preferred: 2–3 years of prior radiation therapist experience.

General Skill Requirements
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience with a practice management system.
  • Attendance and punctuality essential to provide excellent customer service.
Physical / Mental Demands

The role requires frequent use of hands to assist patients, reach, and operate equipment; standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods. Lifting or moving up to 10 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close, color, peripheral, depth, and focus adjustment.

Environmental / Working Conditions

Patient care and office environments with frequent contact with staff and physicians. Work may be stressful. Exposure to radiation, fumes, airborne particles or chemicals necessitates personal protective equipment. Radiation exposure monitored with a film badge.
