Job description

Job Requirements

Provides radiation therapy treatments. Performs simulation; performs quality assurance tests on equipment. Plays an active role in the care of patients through the education process and daily interaction.

Essential Functions Of The Job
  • Provides patient and family education regarding types of treatments, and treatment process and documents.
  • Performs simulations as per established procedures.
  • Administers intravenous contrast following established procedure.
  • Provides treatments using the linear accelerator in safe and competent manner as per established procedures.
  • Monitors patient for treatment related side effects and has the ability to communicate problems with the appropriate personnel.
  • Performs and records daily quality control checks on the linear accelerator, simulator, CT and HDR treatment day QA following established procedures.
  • Communicates in an effective and professional manner, demonstrating respect for patients, families, significant others and other healthcare team members.
  • Ensures accuracy in the medical process, including transport, storage, security and/or administration of medications to include IV solutions.
  • Keeps patient/family informed of scheduled and unscheduled changes in the treatment plan.
  • Establishes annual goals and implements plan for achievement of these goals.
  • Complies with all Federal and State laws and regulations.
  • Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information. Uses and discloses only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Provides guidance, direction, and training to staff and student therapist as directed by Lead Radiation Therapist.
Work Experience

Minimum Education, Experience, and License/Certification Required: Certification as a Registered Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (RTT) and current Maryland Licensure. Must meet and follow state, federal and local professional requirements. Must follow Joint Commission and Regional Cancer Center policies on radiation safety and protection in the deliver and use of radiation producing equipment and sources. Successful completion of an AMA accredited course of study in Radiation Therapy Technology. BLS certification required. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and supervisory skills.

Physical Demands

Must be able to bend, stoop, lift and carry at least 30 pounds.

The employee in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the age of the patients served. He/she must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age‑specific needs, and to provide the necessary care as described in the department’s policies and procedures.
