Job summary

Penn State University’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department seeks an experienced Radiation Safety Officer to oversee a comprehensive radiation safety program across campus. The role ensures regulatory compliance, provides technical guidance, and leads the Radiation Protection Office staff under the supervision of the RSO.

Qualifications

• Degree in Physics, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field preferred.
• Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to diverse audiences is necessary.
• Must be trustworthy and reliable in accordance with NRC and PA DEP requirements.

Responsibilities

• Stewards the University's Broadscope Radioactive Materials Program.
• Stewards the Emergency Response program & the Radioactive Materials Security program.
• Stewards the University's Dosimetry Programs, including the bioassay program.
• Assists team members with dose investigations when necessary.
• Oversees laboratory-based counting equipment and systems.
• Assists the RSO with leadership and guidance to staff, and serves as RSO when unavailable.
