Job summary

West Virginia University seeks a Radiation Safety Specialist to protect staff and patients across WVU campuses and WVU Hospitals. You will support the Director by implementing safety programs, coordinating regulatory compliance, and maintaining health physics databases.

The role involves developing SOPs, monitoring exposures, coordinating waste management, training personnel, and responding to emergencies. A Bachelor's in health physics and 4+ years of relevant experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in health physics, Physical Science, Safety Engineering, Safety Management, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field.
• A minimum of four (4) years of experience in Radiation Safety/Health Physics and/or Health and Safety compliance.
• Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
• All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Responsibilities

• Assists the Director with implementation of new initiatives for increased control of radionuclides under USNRC licenses.
• Implements programs for maintaining occupational radiation exposures in line with NRC and WV health programs.
• Assists with consultations to evaluate radiation safety aspects and provide recommendations on dose assessments.
• Develops SOPs and conducts comprehensive audits for divisions like Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine.
• Determines need for monitoring, evaluates bioassays, and notifies on exposures approaching limits.
