Job summary

Planned Systems International in Lynchburg, VA seeks a Radiation Control Technician to support BWXT programs. You will perform radiological work, ensure BWXT radiological plans are followed, and coordinate with Field Operations on RWP processes.

The role requires a DOE 'Q' clearance (or upgrade from L), HAZWOPER 40-hour, and NRRP T registration or equivalent. You’ll work with multi-disciplinary teams and interface with the Radiation Protection organization.

Qualifications

  • DOE Q clearance required; upgrade from L if needed.
  • NRRPT registration or equivalency acceptable.
  • Maintain HAZWOPER qualification (40-hr) and annual refresher.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Project Manager and Field Operations Manager.
  • Perform radiological work per BWXT policies and procedures.
  • Oversee Field Operations work packages and work orders for radiological compliance.
  • Conduct radiological characterization of waste (NDA, surveys).
  • Interface with BWXT Radiation Protection and customer organizations.
  • Participate in or lead RWP meetings and training for Field Operations.

Overview

Advanced Technologies and Laboratories (ATL), a Planned Systems International (PSI) company, is seeking a Radiation Control Technician BWX Technologies, Inc. in Lynchburg, VA.

  • Report to the Project Manager and Field Operations Manager
  • Perform radiological work in support of assigned projects, ensuring compliance with BWXT radiological policies and procedures
  • Perform oversight and assessment of Field Operations execution of field work packages (FWP) and Work Orders (WO) to ensure adherence to radiological plans and procedures
  • Perform radiological characterization of waste, such as Non-Destructive Analysis (NDA) and surveys
  • Participate in meetings and field walk-downs for project estimates, and as required
  • Attend site radiological meetings, as required
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of areas associated with safety awareness, hazard recognition, and radiological control practices
  • Routinely interface directly with the customer Radiation Protection organization
  • Ensure field technician /field operations training and familiarization of project radiation protection requirements
  • Ensure implementation of the TSG Radiation Protection Management Plan and applicable NOG-L radiation protection requirements
  • Participate in or lead radiological work permit (RWP) meetings, training Field Operations on the RWP and ensuring their familiarization with all RWP requirements.
  • Perform duties, as assigned by supervision, as a Field Operations Technician when not assigned as a radiological Controls Technician
Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities
  • Possess physical capability to provide hands-on health physics measurements and monitoring requiring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in support of FMS projects and the ESHQ Directorate.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
  • An in-depth understanding and expertise in radiological work practices, processes, and operations, typically developed through a combination of job-related training and considerable on-the-job experience
  • Experience working in challenging work environment
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Prepare and maintain documentation and reports of monitoring activities.
Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years relevant experience
  • The candidate must have a Department of Energy (DOE) "Q" security clearance. Candidates with an active "L" clearance will be required to upgrade to a "Q" clearance. Completed DOE Core Training Card
  • They may provide equivalency, that is, registration under the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT)
  • Maintaining qualification (DOE Core or NRRPT) is the responsibility of the subcontractor
  • Technician provides, in advance, evidence of medical qualification for use of a respiratory protection device
  • Fit testing for respirators provided, but the medical certification to wear a respirator will be the responsibility of the subcontractor.
  • Technician shall be current in 40-hour Hazardous Waste Site Operations HAZWOPER and annual 8-hour refresher course
  • Maintaining annual HAZWOPER qualification is the responsibility of the subcontractor
