Job description

Position Summary

This position is for a 2nd shift (4 pm to 2:30 am) operator of large radial arm drill presses in a shop without A/C. Drilling, reaming, tapping, countersinking, and counterboring are the most common operations performed. A wide variety of workpiece sizes and shapes are machined using assorted clamps, chucks, and vises to hold them. Materials such as galvanized mild steel, 300 series stainless steels, and G10 fiber/resin blocks are typical. Some workpieces will require the use of a jib crane. Drilled holes can be as large as 4-1/8” and taps can be up to 4”. The candidate must work safely alone, stay focused, and ask for help when needed. Overtime, including weekends, may be required. The shop environment is dynamic, requiring flexibility and creative problem-solving. PTP supplies the necessary tools and measuring instruments.

Key Responsibilities

1. Set up and operate two or three large radial arm drill presses efficiently and safely.
2. Maintain cutting tools, tooling, and ensure the machines and work area are clean and organized.
3. Adhere to PTP standards of quality, productivity, and safety in all tasks.

Required Skills & Qualifications

1. Experience in setting up and operating large radial arm drill presses; this is not a trainee position.
2. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings, use decimal equivalent charts, and understand UNC, UNF, NPT, and NPS threads.
3. Skill in re-sharpening drills by hand or on a Sterling drill sharpener.

Education & Experience

1. High school diploma or GED; proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
2. Minimum of 2 years of on-the-job experience operating and troubleshooting large radial arm drill presses and tooling.
3. Proficiency in arithmetic, geometry, machining speeds, feeds, cutting tool selection, and shop safety practices.
4. Experience with measurement tools such as tape measures, dial calipers, indicators, and micrometers.
5. Familiarity with Bickford, Carlton, and Ooya radial arm drill presses is a plus.
