The Radiology Technologist Supervisor-Specialist Team provides day-to-day supervision for an assigned Radiology area (e.g., Diagnostic, Breast Imaging, Stony Point, CT/MRI, 3D lab). Responsibilities include STAR Service, legal and regulatory compliance, clinical operations, human resources, safety & quality, customer service, leadership, and fiscal responsibility. This position ensures all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed by qualified staff, are of high quality, and follow radiation safety principles of ALARA, ACR Guidelines for imaging practices, and ACR Guidelines for MRI Safety, if applicable.
Ensure compliance with VCU and VCUHS policies and procedures.
The Supervisor works directly with lead technologists and staff to solve problems and implement new initiatives, programs, and policies. Collaborating with other Supervisors, Managers, Faculty, and staff, the role ensures departmental safety, quality, and teamwork. Reporting to the Modality Manager, the Supervisor oversees clinical functions and processes, ensuring operational excellence, safety, efficiency, and cost-effective care.
This role supervises, maintains, and improves business functions related to their areas. It involves developing staff education, competencies, and providing education to team members, students, residents, and learners. The work is within the Scope of Practice of the specialty, as described in the Staff Technologist job description. The position also maintains technical competency in all responsibility areas.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: ARRT certification required; specific specialty registries depend on the department (e.g., Mammography, CT, MRI, Interventional, 3D lab, Cardiac Interventional Radiography, RCIS, RCES).
For continued employment: Current ARRT certification in the relevant specialty.
Experience REQUIRED: Minimum of two (2) years as Lead Tech or equivalent in Diagnostic Radiology.
Experience PREFERRED: Leadership experience, prior work in an academic medical center.
Education/training REQUIRED: Graduation from an ARRT-recognized JRC Accredited Radiologic Technology program.
Education/training PREFERRED: Bachelor’s in Clinical Radiation Science, Business, or related; Master’s in Health Administration, Business, or related.
Independent actions: Daily workflow coordination and supervision; advice from Manager on major issues.
Supervisory responsibilities: All team members in the assigned modality report to this position; may cover unplanned absences.
Additional requirements: Weekend and after-hours coverage may be required.
Physical requirements: Lifting 20-50 lbs., exposure to hazardous substances, prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching, and cognitive skills like reasoning, problem-solving, and strong recall.
