Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Global Data Center Infrastructure (GDCI) Network Fulfillment is responsible for designing and deploying customer-facing networks. Our goals are to constantly improve through Flawless Execution, maintaining Available Capacity, fostering Engaged Rackers, becoming Increasingly Efficient & building a Rock Solid Foundation.

We are looking for a Network Engineer-II responsible for designing, configuring, and installing customer-facing Local Area Networks (LAN), colocation, and integration with cloud service providers. The Network Engineer-II will provide technical support and documentation to various departments and users regarding customer networks. In addition, the Network Engineer-II may serve as a liaison to gather network requirements from internal and external customers, vendors, and other third-party providers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Key Accountabilities

CAPACITY AND CONNECTIVITY:

  1. Work with remote datacenter Rackers to maintain network capacity for Rackspace’s shared and cloud environments.
  2. Ensure that customer-dedicated networks are quickly and accurately deployed.
  3. Work with internal and external customers and vendors to establish Rack Connect Global connectivity to the world’s leading cloud service providers.
  4. Lead off-premise builds that adhere to Rackspace standards for industry-leading support.
  5. Provide technical knowledge to colocation customers to ensure standardized connectivity into Rackspace infrastructure.

DESIGN AND PROVISION:

  1. Provide a technical overview to Sales Rackers and define hardware Bill-Of-Materials required for network builds.
  2. Examine build-out designs for deficiencies and facilitate corrections.
  3. Assist colocation customers with connectivity to the Rackspace network.
  4. Work with remote datacenter resources to action hardware and cabling deployments.
  5. Update internal documentation with designs and publish for consumption.
  6. Update internal tools for deployed hardware, VLAN’s, IP’s and DNS.
  7. Provide datacenter resources with cabling requirements; examine hardware and cabling deployments for accuracy.

BUILD:

  1. Install software configurations against hardware components.
  2. Examine logical configurations for accuracy.
  3. Prepare maintenance plan documentation & change management.
  4. Examine maintenance plans for accuracy.
  5. Examine change management for accuracy.
  6. Script maintenance implementations.
  7. Work in either a lead role or assisting role during maintenance implementations.

IMPROVEMENTS:

  1. Update and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) & Methods of Procedures (MOPs).
  2. Develop network standardization practices.
  3. Document informational content for nonstandard network designs to be utilized by NOC support.
  4. Participate in Root Cause Analysis sessions to achieve better networking practices.

ADDITIONAL:

  1. Act as escalations point of contact for nonstandard customer deployment and cloud provider connectivity.
  2. Conduct provider testing and deployment of new services.
  3. Establish build priority based on customer and business needs.

Key Performance Indicators (please note your KPI’s are the outputs of each of the accountabilities)

  1. Current Rackspace GDCI Network design practices are adhered to or adjusted based on customer requirements.
  2. Maintenance planning is performed with particular attention to customer uptime and proper notification.
  3. All maintenance planning is reviewed by a peer(s) to determine if unknown variables have been introduced and if the maintenance plan is sound.
  4. Demonstrate sound judgment in the role during maintenance activities.
  5. Documentation is created for new, special cases or absent network designs.

MAIN CONTACTS (external/internal):

  1. Internal Rackspace Contacts (daily: communication on the status of deployments, migrations, and other tasks).
  2. External Customers/Vendors (varies: configuration, remote connectivity, maintenance planning and status communication).
  3. External Vendors (varies: supervision and oversight of work undertaken).
  4. GDCI Network Fulfillment: (varies: all peers for work planning, quality control, change sponsorship, team meetings).
  5. GDCI Network Engineering: (varies: network edge capacity planning, escalations).
  6. GDCI Data Center Operations: (varies: resource planning, cabinet layout, cabling requests and troubleshooting).
  7. GDCI Inventory: (varies: hardware acquisitions).
  8. GDCI Tactical Operations: (varies: maintenance monitoring, notifications, disruptive events, handoff of one-off designs).
  9. GDCI Strategic Operations: (varies: tools enhancements, training and documentation).

REQUIREMENTS:
1. Intermediate level experience working with most of the following technologies/applications: MPLS, BGP, LDP, QoS, IPv6, OSPF, vPC, STP, DWDM, EVPN, L2VPN, MPLS VPN, L3VPN, FHRP, VLAN, CDP, port-channels, IS-IS, MPLS Inter-AS, VXLAN, DNS, ACL, GitHub, API’s, virtual switching.

2. Multi-vendor experience working with the following platforms: Cisco IOS, ASR 1k (IOS-XE), ASR NCS (IOS-XR), Nexus (NX-OS), Arista (EOS).

3. Industry recognized certifications: CCNA desired, CCDA, CCNP, CCDP preferred, CCIE (R&S, SP or DC) highly preferred (or equivalent experience).

4. Minimum 5- years of recent experience with network design and build-out of LAN/WAN’s and/or cloud service provider connectivity.

5. Experience working in service provider, datacenter hosting environment, or large-scale enterprise networks.

6. Experience researching, evaluating, and recommending hardware and/or software solutions supporting large scale deployments and/or remediation’s against the LAN/WAN.

7. Experience working with network vendors and cloud providers (AWS, Azure, Google) with an understanding of the services, hardware, and software portfolios they provide.

8. Ability to identify areas of process improvement and provide input and solution options to streamline work.

9. Excellent writing, documentation, and communication skills.

10. The ability to communicate well with technical and non-technical peers.

11. Customer service-oriented attitude.

12. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, 24x7x365 coverage, including holidays and weekends.

13. Experience with network service monitoring systems (Arbor, Zenoss, Syslog, SolarWinds, Splunk, Kibana, WhatsUpGold, etc…).

14. High School diploma or equivalent required; University or College degree preferred in the Computer Science or Network Engineering fields.

HIGHLY DESIRED:
1. Experience with Lab network modeling.

2. Experience with troubleshooting and resolution of network issues.
