Job summary

FMC Talent is seeking a Racing Development Engineer in Michigan to advance high-performance engine systems from concept through testing and race-track support. You will collaborate with engineers, technicians and race teams to drive reliability, drivability and performance improvements on demanding powertrains.

The role requires hands-on experience with internal combustion engines, CAD proficiency and a track-record of delivering results under tight deadlines in motorsport contexts.

Qualifications

• Five years of engineering experience focused on internal combustion engines.

Responsibilities

• Develop and improve high-performance engine systems; combine analysis with testing and trackside support.

• Prepare, run and analyze dynamometer tests for engine development.
• Support vehicle integration, including engine controls and data acquisition.
• Produce technical reports and maintain testing/calibration records.
• Contribute to race prep and post-event reviews while maintaining safety standards.

As a Racing Development Engineer, you’ll work on the development of engine and powertrain technology for demanding motorsport applications. You’ll solve technical problems, support testing and development programmes, and work closely with other engineers to turn data and ideas into improvements that can deliver performance.

What will your day to day look like?

As a Racing Development Engineer, you’ll help develop and improve high-performance engine systems, combining engineering analysis with practical testing and trackside support. You’ll work closely with engineers, technicians and race teams to improve performance, reliability and competitiveness.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Supporting race, test and development events, troubleshooting mechanical and electronic issues under tight time constraints.
• Analysing engine and vehicle data to identify improvements and inform technical decisions.
• Developing engine calibrations to optimise performance, drivability, fuel efficiency and durability.
• Preparing, running and analysing dynamometer tests to support engine development and validation.
• Investigating performance and reliability issues, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
• Supporting vehicle integration, including engine controls, sensors and data acquisition systems.
• Producing technical reports and maintaining accurate testing, calibration and repair records.
• Contributing to race preparation and post-event reviews while maintaining safety and quality standards.

This role will suit you if you…

• Hold a degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Automotive Engineering, or have equivalent education and experience.
• Have at least five years of engineering experience focused on internal combustion engines, which may include relevant university project experience.
• Have supported high-performance engine, powertrain or motorsport development programmes.
• Combine a first-principles engineering approach with strong practical mechanical skills.
• Are proficient in SolidWorks or similar CAD software and familiar with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
• Communicate technical information clearly and enjoy working collaboratively.
• Are resourceful, motivated and comfortable solving problems to tight deadlines.
• Have a strong interest in motorsport and high-performance engines.

Experience with Formula SAE or Baja powertrain teams, hands-on fabrication and the demands of a racing environment would be advantageous.
