Job Description and Requirements

We are seeking an experienced System Safety Engineer to join the Systems Engineering Department within the Undersea Systems Office at Penn State ARL. The role involves working within the Department of Defense safety processes and contributing to the development of next-generation undersea systems, from concept to testing. The candidate will develop in-depth knowledge of ARL systems and represent them within the safety community.

ARL is a DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes transitioning military members to apply.

You will:
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to understand ARL systems
  • Perform safety analyses as per MIL-STD-882E, including hazard analyses and software safety assessments
  • Review engineering documents for safety compliance and mitigate hazards
  • Participate in investigations and root cause analyses
  • Work with Navy and other external teams to ensure safety
  • Engage with safety working groups and communicate with government safety agencies
  • Develop safety documentation such as Safety Program Plans and Hazard Management Plans
Additional for higher levels:
  • Lead safety efforts on projects
  • Mentor and train staff
  • Represent programs in reviews and meetings

This position can be at multiple levels, requiring a Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of related experience; a Master’s Degree is preferred. Additional experience and education are required for higher levels.

Required Skills:
  • System Safety or related engineering field
  • Strong presentation and communication skills
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Preferred Skills:
  • Familiarity with safety standards and analyses (FMEA, FMECA, Fault Trees, etc.)
  • Hardware and software development experience
  • Active security clearance

Salary Range: $86,300 - $191,000 annually
