What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Senior Manager who will lead the Integrated Nanotechnologies Group, a highly collaborative group of 50-60 staff and postdocs with expertise in nanoscience that is part of the Material, Physical, and Chemical Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. This group works at the nexus of nanostructured materials, quantum science, advanced microelectronics, and advanced manufacturing alongside collaborators from across the country, combining fundamental science and technological innovation in ways that will benefit our nation. This senior manager will also serve as the Co-Director for the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). CINT is a Department of Energy (DOE) funded partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), with facilities at both sites. This exciting Senior Manager role thus includes supporting an enthusiastic user community (~500/year), many of whom perform research on site at Sandia's CINT facility. The leadership of CINT is shared with LANL, so the successful applicant must be capable of leading a jointly operated, multi-institutional enterprise.

On any given day, the Senior Manager will be asked to:

Nurture an intellectual environment conducive to scientific research, development, and innovation that retains and attracts the highest caliber scientific staff and ensures appropriate mentoring and supervision of postdocs and students

Implement appropriate safety, environment, security, and quality, compliance and administrative policies

Collaborate as a trusted member of the Materials, Physics, and Chemistry Center management team, championing the strategic, tactical, and operational success of the center in partnership with the other Sr. Managers and the Center Director

Contribute broadly to supporting Sandia's dual missions as both one of 17 Department of Energy national laboratories and one of three National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories

The Senior Manager must also:

Provide leadership to ensure the success of CINT's scientific user program

Maintain a trusted and effective partnership between Sandia and LANL

Ensure CINT strategy is aligned to the missions and strategies of the DOE Office of Science (SC), Basic Energy Sciences (BES), and the two host Laboratories

Serve as the primary point of contact for CINT's BES customer and external advisory bodies, the scientific advisory committee and the user executive committee

Due to the nature of the work, the selected candidate must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$193,000 - $328,200

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials or a closely related field with 10 years of relevant scientific research experience following the completion of your PhD

A minimum of three years of formal supervisory/managerial leadership experience

Demonstrated scientific achievements and recognition in nanoscience, nanotechnology, quantum science, microelectronics, materials science, or closely related fields, as evidenced by publications, citations, and presentations

Prior experience overseeing productive multi-disciplinary research and development teams, including the ability to manage resources, operations, and scientific programs in a complex research environment

Record of successful recruitment, hiring, mentorship, and technical development of high performing research personnel

Demonstrated ability to safely, securely, and effectively manage diverse research facilities with chemical, biological, electrical, and other laboratory hazards

Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders, with a track record of successful scientific proposal writing

Experience working with the Department of Energy's Office of Science or the National Nuclear Security Administration

Knowledge and understanding of how CINT can support the energy mission of DOE as well as other related mission areas (e.g., quantum science, microelectronics, and advanced manufacturing)

Experience with national user facilities, especially the Nanoscale Science Research Centers (NSRCs)

A strong technical understanding across CINT's scientific thrusts

A working network of scientific contacts encompassing Sandia’s and Los Alamos' diverse technical base

Involvement and leadership in the international scientific community, including engagement with professional organizations, societies, and workshops/meetings

About Our Team:

CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center (US DOE/SC NSRC) jointly supported by Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory, operating as a national user facility devoted to establishing nanoscale science by developing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance and integration of nanoscale materials. With sites in both Albuquerque, NM and Los Alamos, NM, CINT provides world-class facilities and expertise to the broad scientific community with the mission to support and accelerate the progress of nanoscience. Proposal-based access is offered to tools and expertise focused around the following CINT scientific thrust areas: In-Situ Characterization and Nanomechanics, Nanophotonics and Optical Nanomaterials, Soft, Biological, and Composite Nanomaterials, and Quantum Materials Systems.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
