Qualifications

Job description

R&D Machinist (Precision)

About SMP Engineering:

In a nutshell, we work on the hard stuff. Our customers come to us to quickly engineer cost-effective solutions to a wide range of technical challenges. These include product development and design to manufacturing/factory automation and everything in between. Projects like these require us to be fast and accurate since time lost getting to market reduces profits. We take these projects from the concept phase all the way to delivery of production hardware to the end customer. To do this, we are constantly looking for the best engineering talent.

Responsibilities:

  1. Use of calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and standard measuring equipment.
  2. Engineering drawing interpretation and inspection using GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  3. Able to plan projects, select proper cutters for materials, and set up hardware processing.
  4. Develop tooling and fixturing solutions for new machining applications.
  5. Use Fusion 360, Solidworks, or CAD/CAM and manual programming to develop CNC programs and macros.
  6. Train and mentor novice CNC users.
  7. Maintain lab/shop tools and consumables.
  8. Set up CNC Mills and Lathes and run programs on samples provided by requesting engineers/technicians.

Requirements:

  1. 5+ years of experience in machining and fabrication; preferably in an R&D environment.
  2. Experience with setting up and operating Multi-Axis CNC Machines (mills & lathes) up to and including 5-axis mills and 4-axis lathes. Experience with HAAS control is a plus.
  3. Competent in recent versions of software systems such as Fusion 360.
  4. Good understanding of G code and hand-editing code at the machine.
  5. 3-5 years of hands-on CNC operation (HAAS preferred).
  6. Strong CAD/CAM experience (Solidworks) and Fusion 360.
  7. Fine motor skills and extreme attention to detail.
  8. Ability to lift and carry 50lbs.
