ABB’s Distribution Solutions Division in the United States seeks an engineer to contribute to the development of non-arc and arc-resistant medium-voltage switchgear, collaborating with Product Managers, Project Managers, and R&D staff to turn customer feedback into robust designs.

The role requires a Bachelor’s or Master’s in engineering, 2+ years in electrical power equipment R&D, and hands-on experience with SolidWorks/Creo and Windchill, plus knowledge of ANSI/IEEE/NEMA/UL standards and

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical preferred).
  • Minimum 2 years of R&D experience in electrical power equipment industry.
  • Experience with mechanical design of Low/Medium Voltage ANSI switchgear or similar equipment.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and PLM tools (SolidWorks or Creo with Windchill).
  • Knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, UL standards.
  • Experience supporting type tests at internal/external labs.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of new product designs of non-arc and arc-resistant MV switchgear (Metal-Enclosed, Metal-Clad).
  • Engage in cost optimization and design enhancements to maintain technology leadership.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Project Managers, and R&D Engineers across the lifecycle.
  • Validate product robustness through simulations, analytical methods, and physical testing.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation including manuals, project records, and design/test reports.
  • Provide technical guidance to cross-functional teams for supplier selection and component evaluation.
