Job summary

UC San Diego is seeking a qualified Research and Development Engineer 3 TX to support the Integrated Electronics and Biointerfaces Laboratory on the campus. Under minimal supervision, the engineer will coordinate vendors, install and qualify cleanroom equipment, perform routine maintenance, and assist in GMP-compliant procedures and documentation for nano/microfabrication workflows.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Bioengineering or a closely related field. A Master’s or Ph.D. is often expected for seasoned equipment engineering work in a research-intensive GMP environment.
• 5+ years of experience in equipment management and process development for micro/nanofabrication, preferably in a cleanroom environment.
• Hands-on experience designing, testing and maintaining specialized and novel micro/nano fabrication equipment, e.g., photolithography, thin film deposition, dry etching, metrology tools.
• Experience developing instrumentation to full capability and implementing equipment upgrades / laboratory improvements.
• Familiarity with micro/nano-device fabrication and characterization workflows used for implantable/neurotechnology devices.

Responsibilities

• Assist the IEBL with daily lab operations under minimal supervision.
• Coordinate with vendors to acquire and set up cleanroom equipment and assist in qualification, calibration and maintenance.
• Perform routine maintenance procedures for instrumentation used in device fabrication and electrophysiological arrays.
• Maintain GMP-like documentation and prepare for third-party audits.
• Support administrative tasks and data management for GMP compliance.
