As an R&D Engineer I, you will develop life-saving medical device products for spine surgery. Your responsibilities include collaborating with a team to lead new product development, designing implants, instruments, and systems, conducting product and use testing, and managing system interfaces. You will actively seek Voice of the Customer (VOC) input and translate that into product requirements, design specifications, and mechanical concepts. You will work under general direction and may serve as a key team member. The focus will be on spinal implants and instrumentation to treat degenerative, deformity, and tumor/trauma conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement all aspects of multiple designs and development of new medical devices from initial concept to market release, following project timelines and development processes.
  • Design solutions that meet customer needs, regulatory standards, and business goals.
  • Provide technical leadership in system design risk management, understanding system interfaces, investigating issues, and leading testing activities.
  • Engage with customers to understand and prioritize their needs, applying feedback to improve designs.
  • Translate customer needs into requirements and specifications.
  • Optimize designs through relevant testing, experiments, and evaluations.
  • Define and perform verification and validation activities to ensure products meet requirements and user needs.
  • Document results in engineering reports and presentations.
  • Build domain knowledge on spinal systems through customer visits, labs, literature, and training.
  • Document tradeoffs, rationales, and solutions.
  • Support documentation throughout research and development phases.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and consultants for timely delivery.
  • Evaluate existing technologies and contribute to inventions and new designs.
  • Maintain understanding of quality policies and ensure compliance.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a technical field, preferably Mechanical Engineering.
Nice to Have
  • Strong team player with a goal to succeed collectively.
  • Knowledge of engineering drawing standards, GD&T, and tolerances.
  • Proficiency with CREO, SolidWorks, or similar CAD software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments and OR environment (spine experience is a plus).
  • Collaborative in cross-functional, multicultural teams.
  • Learning mindset and openness to guidance.

Travel: Less than 10%, domestic.

Location: Memphis, TN.
