Position Summary:
The Barnstable High School Music Program seeks a dedicated and skilled Jazz Lab Instructor to collaborate with the Jazz Band Director in developing and guiding student musicians across large and small ensemble settings. The successful candidate will bring a strong background in jazz pedagogy, improvisation, and ensemble direction, and will play an integral role in preparing students for festivals, adjudicated events, and public performances. This position involves a combination of after‑school rehearsals and select daytime ensemble work as coordinated with the music department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Jazz Band Director to plan, organize, and lead large jazz ensemble rehearsals and performances, ensuring a cohesive and musically rigorous experience for all students.
- Facilitate small group and sectional rehearsals, providing targeted instruction in jazz theory, improvisation, style, and ensemble skills.
- Participate in scheduled after‑school rehearsals and designated during‑the‑day ensemble sessions as coordinated with the Jazz Band Director and music department calendar.
- Prepare students for participation in jazz festivals, competitions, and adjudicated events by developing repertoire, refining technique, and coaching performance practices.
- Provide individualized instruction and constructive feedback to help students grow as jazz musicians, improvisers, and collaborative ensemble members.
- Assist in the selection and arrangement of repertoire appropriate to student skill levels and festival requirements.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and high‑expectation learning environment that encourages musical risk‑taking, creative expression, and mutual respect among all ensemble members.
- Communicate regularly with students, parents, and the Jazz Band Director regarding rehearsal schedules, student progress, and upcoming performance opportunities.
- Ensure the safety and well‑being of all students during rehearsals, performances, and related activities.
- Participate in professional development to remain current with best practices in jazz education and ensemble performance.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience directing or instructing jazz ensembles, large band, or small group jazz settings
- Strong knowledge of jazz theory, improvisation, and contemporary jazz styles and repertoire
- Ability to effectively lead and differentiate instruction across both large ensemble and small group formats
- Familiarity with jazz festival formats, adjudication criteria, and competitive performance preparation
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with students, parents, staff, and community stakeholders
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds
