Job summary

QuEra Computing Inc. in Boston, MA is hiring a Scientific Software Engineer – Machine Programming to maintain the DSL and Kirin-based compiler stack used by scientists operating quantum machines.

You will work with physicists and control stack engineers to translate experimental needs into reliable software and tools, ensuring seamless integration with our control system while contributing to a growing roadmap for usability and impact.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Strong Python skills, including type hints, packaging and testing (pytest).
• Clear written and verbal communication for collaboration with scientists who are not professional software developers.
• Experience across team boundaries: interfaces, coordinating changes between components and debugging problems that span several systems.
• Experience debugging unfamiliar code and reducing complex failures to minimal reproductions.
• Familiarity with the full software lifecycle: version control, code review, testing, CI/CD, logging, profiling, debugging and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the domain-specific language and its compilation stack: triage issues, fix bugs, review PRs, manage releases and keep CI, tests and dependencies healthy.
• Act as the point of contact for machine and testbed teams programming their experiments; help port legacy programs and diagnose issues.
• Work with control stack engineers on integrating compiled programs with our control system, keeping representations in sync across releases.
• Turn user problems into minimal reproducible reports, regression tests and focused fixes; contribute to larger language/IR changes.
• Identify and fix performance issues in compilation and execution, including compile time and program size.
• Write and maintain user-facing documentation, tutorials, and example programs to help physicists write correct programs.
• Collaborate with hardware control to support new channel types and machine configurations.
• Collect feedback from machine users to shape a prioritized usability roadmap.
