Job summary

QuEra Computing, Inc. in Boston, MA, seeks a Control System Engineer/SRE to integrate and maintain hardware and software control systems for our quantum computer stack.

You will collaborate with software, physics, hardware, and test engineers to install, upgrade, test, and troubleshoot systems in development and production environments. Responsibilities include building reliable, scalable infrastructure, implementing automation, and maintaining observability and incident response.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in CS, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5-8 years of experience in Network SQA, Systems Engineering, SRE, or infrastructure roles.
• Experience with Linux and Windows administration and network operations.
• Proficiency in scripting (Python, Bash, Go) and familiarity with Docker, Git, and Kubernetes.
• Experience with CI/CD tools and infrastructure-as-code (Ansible, Terraform).
• Familiarity with observability/logging stacks (Grafana, Prometheus, ELK).

Responsibilities

• Implement, maintain and test hardware and software control systems.
• Define procedures for quantum computer operations.
• Manage infrastructure including HIL setups, containers (K8S), routers, switches.
• Automate provisioning and orchestration of compute systems used in controlling and testing, simulations.

• Enforce access control and lab operations best practices.
• Support incident response and root cause analysis for CI/CD failures or system issues.
• Implement monitoring and alerting across embedded systems and test benches.
• Work with CI/CD pipelines for building, testing, and deploying software and firmware across the quantum control stack.

Role Overview
We are looking for a Control System Engineer/Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to i ntegrate and maintain the hardware and software systems that enable QuEra’s quantum control s and software stack . You’ll work closely with software engineers, physicists, hardware and test engineers to install, upgrade, maintain , test and troubleshoot multiple hardware and software control systems for our Quantum Computer s . This role is a foundational systems engineering role to ensur e the reliability, stability , and operational functionality of both our development and production environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement, maintain and test software and hardware in a heterogeneous system that controls disparate computer system devices .
• Define, document, implement and test procedures for QuEra’s Quantum computer operations .
• Manage science, development and testing infrastructure, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setups, containerized services (K8S), routers, switches , and test systems .
• Propose, and/or implement a utomate d provisioning, configuration, and orchestration of local and remote c ompute systems used in c ontrolling and testing, simulation s .
• Collaborate with software and test engineering teams to ensure smooth integration /deployment of DevOps tools with custom hardware and quantum-specific workflows.
• Maintain artifact repositories, test result dashboards, and infrastructure for tracking regressions and system health.
• Establish and enforce best practices for access control, system configuration, and lab operations .
• Support incident response, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis for CI/CD failures or system anomalies.
• Implement automation for monitoring and alerting for systems and services , integrating logs and metrics from embedded systems, test benches, and orchestration layers.
• Work with CI/CD pipelines for building, testing, and deploying software and firmware across the quantum control stack.

Required Qualifications

• Practical implementation of LAN and WAN technologies on switches and routers (to include but not be limited to VLAN configuration, DNS, DHCP , and TCP /IP based services)
• Practical Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Redhat ) and Windows Administration experience , to include but not be limited to network operations and, application installation and debugging
• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or Go, and familiarity with tools like Docker, Git, and Kubernetes.
• Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitLab CI, Jenkins) and infrastructure-as-code platforms (e.g., Ansible, Terraform, or similar).
• Familiarity with observability tools (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, ELK stack) and logging systems for real-time data monitoring.
• Hands on experience with rack mount servers
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science , Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5-8 years of experience in a Network SQA, Systems Engineering , SRE, or infrastructure engineering roles.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting hybrid systems involving embedded devices, custom hardware, or real-time control systems.
• Knowledge of secure software deployment and Product life cycles .
• Experience with hardware-in-the-loop pipelines or distributed lab/test automation environments.
• Exposure to scientific computing, HPC, or quantum software stacks is a plus.
• Ability to thrive in fast-moving, interdisciplinary R&D teams.

Salary range is $160,000-$200,000. We consistently monitor external market data and update base salary ranges accordingly. We determine base compensation decisions on several factors, including as geographic placement, role-specific knowledge, skills, and/or experience. In addition to our base salary offerings, we also provide equity grants for all new hires.
