Job summary

Ingersoll Rand is seeking a Quality Technician I for the 1st shift at our Southern Pines, NC facility. This on-site role focuses on inspection, data collection, and documentation to ensure materials meet engineering specs and customer requirements.

You will work under the Quality Manager/Engineer, lead problem solving, and apply calipers, micrometers, and GD&T to uphold ISO 9001:2015 standards. A high school diploma and 5+ years quality experience are required.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple English instructions and memos.
  • Strong mathematical skills including statistics and geometry.
  • Experience in a manufacturing quality environment with measurement records.
  • Proficient in documenting inspection results and QA data.
  • Knowledge of PPAP processes and customer returns handling is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Improve, develop and initiate standards for inspection and testing of materials.
  • Support QA via data collection for PPAP and customer returns.
  • Ensure material meets engineering specs and customer requirements.
  • Investigate and report on internal/external complaints and root causes.
  • Maintain inspection records and certifications; use GD&T with blueprints.
  • Lead or participate in problem solving under a Quality Engineer's direction.

Job Overview

Facilitate and lead activities concerned with development, application, and maintenance of production, metrology and customer claims by performing the following duties:

Responsibilities
  • Improve, develop and initiate standards and methods for examination, inspection, measurement and testing of material used to manufacture product.
  • Support the Quality Manager/Engineer function by collecting and distributing data relevant to specified projects - i.e. PPAP Process, Customer Returns process, etc.
  • Assure that material meets engineering specification and customer requirements.
  • Provide tactical quality support to operations by Investigating, Troubleshooting and Reporting on both Internal and External customer complaints .
  • Maintain records, certifications and documentation for completed inspections.
  • Participate and/or lead problem solving events under the direction of a Quality Engineer.
  • Disposition material and coordinate with purchasing on supplied material.
  • May periodically assist in orienting, training, assigning, and checking the work of other employees.
  • Advanced knowledge of ISO 9001:2015, ERP Systems and NCR System.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge with Blueprint reading and application of GD&T.
  • Support additional responsibilities as required.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma OR General Education Degree (GED) required and a minimum of five (5) years quality experience in a manufacturing environment (prefer machining and assembly background). OR
  • Associates degree, Technical/Business School Certificate, or Skilled Trades Apprenticeship and a minimum of three (3) years quality experience in a manufacturing environment (prefer machining and assembly background).
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions in English, short correspondence, and memos, such as supervisory instructions, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and work orders.
  • Ability to effectively share information about job duties in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.
  • Working knowledge of advanced mathematics (i.e. statistics, geometry and trigonometric functions).
  • Ability to perform these operations using all units of measure.
Core Competencies
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to work overtime and assist in other areas as needed.
  • Advanced understanding of assembly methods.
  • Capable of utilizing conventional measuring equipment including but not limited to calipers, micrometers, optical comparators, microscopes and other types of inspection devices.
  • Advanced understanding of blueprints and other documents that define product specification.
  • Advanced knowledge of root cause analysis (5 Whys, 8D, Fishbone, FMEA).
  • Must be detailed oriented and able to prioritize workload as demands change.
  • Understanding of manufacturing Lean principles.
  • Possess advanced computer skills with experience in Microsoft Excel and Word.
Preferences
  • CMM certified (preferred, but not required)

  • The employee may be required to lift more than 35 pounds and must get assistance by using a material handling device or get assistance from other employees.

  • Capable and willing to crawl, crouch, lay prone and work within tight areas.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception.
  • Use of telephone, computer, radios, paging systems and other communication devices as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, airborne particles and vibration from hammering of parts and using hand tools.
  • Since it is a manufacturing environment, the noise level is usually loud due to the different machinery being operated (i.e. forklifts, hand tools, machines in other departments) and the testing that occurs. Normal noise exposure in the area ranges from 80-90 dba; hearing protection is required while on the plant floor.
