Technique is looking for a Quality Technician 3 to join our team at our Jackson, Michigan facility. This position reports to the Quality Manager in the Quality department. This role inspects and measures components and finished products to determine compliance with engineering requirements, using CMMs and PolyWorks metrology software alongside a full range of precision inspection equipment. The employee will create and maintain quality records and metrics, assist with dispositioning nonconforming product, develop procedures for quality system compliance, lead continuous improvement projects, and work with customers and vendors on quality‑related issues in coordination with account managers and the purchasing department.
The ideal candidate brings 3–5 years of hands‑on quality control experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment, with proven CMM experience and the ability to write complete PolyWorks inspection programs. A strong working knowledge of GD&T, experience in an ISO 9000 environment, and familiarity with PPAP, MSA/Gage R&R, SPC (Minitab), and calibration (GAGEpack) are critical factors in this role, along with the ability to train and mentor others on metrology tools and techniques.
Responsibilities:
- Inspect and measure product – Inspect and measure components and finished products to determine compliance with engineering requirements.
- Maintain quality records – Create and maintain records, data, and metrics containing all pertinent information necessary for quality assurance.
- Disposition nonconforming product – Assist with dispositioning nonconforming product.
- Develop quality procedures – Develop procedures and processes, and coordinate efforts for quality system compliance.
- Lead continuous improvement – Participate in and lead quality/continuous improvement projects with a goal of continuous process, system, and product improvement.
- Resolve customer and vendor quality issues – In coordination with account managers and the purchasing department, work with customers and vendors on quality‑related issues.
- Complete customer inspection requirements – Fully complete customer inspection requirements independently.
- Manage containment – Understand quality plans, quality spills, and product containment, and explain nonconforming product and containment to others.
- Explain the quality system – Understand and explain the Quality System (ISO-9001) and document levels.
- Lead quality training – Lead Quality Training for new associates.
- Assemble and submit quality packages – Assemble and submit PPAP, first article inspection, source releases, and quality packages.
- Perform product inspections – Perform final, in‑process, and first piece inspection for purchased and manufactured product; segregate and evaluate nonconforming product, providing insight and feedback.
- Operate CMMs – Utilize PolyWorks to operate CMMs as needed with programs established on coordinate measuring machines.
- Verify equipment condition – Ensure precision machinery is in working condition and properly calibrated prior to use.
- Communicate print requirements – Use prints to provide precise information on dimensions, tolerances, and special characteristics of parts to various departments.
- Provide inspection reports – Provide understandable feedback (inspection reports) to technicians and management as directed/needed, comparing results with customer and blueprint specifications and calculating differences between readings and specifications.
- Complete IMDS submissions – Complete IMDS submissions.
- Support part development – Help technicians with part development for stampings, machined components, tubing, 3D laser cut components, and assemblies.
- Interpret engineering drawings – Interpret engineering drawings with an intermediate working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Complete corrective actions – Complete CARs using problem‑solving methods such as 8D, 5 Why, and Fishbone diagrams.
- Set up specialty inspection equipment – Set up the Surface Profilometer, Sonic Checker‑Thickness, and Optical Comparator.
- Read blueprints and explain GD&T – Apply a proven working knowledge of GD&T to read blueprints and explain GD&T to others.
- Teach calibration practices – Provide instruction on cleaning, maintaining, and calibrating precision measuring and test equipment.
- Perform calibration – Utilize GAGEpack software to perform and/or assist with calibration of inspection fixtures, gauges, holding fixtures, handheld metrology tools, etc. per the established schedule.
- Repair inspection tools – Perform and/or assist with repair, rework, and modification of existing inspection tools.
- Manage customer portal submissions – Create and complete customer documentation submissions via assigned customer portals while exhibiting excellent record keeping.
- Mentor team members – Mentor team members on the use of existing metrology tools, software, and techniques.
- Train on measuring equipment – Apply an advanced understanding of measuring equipment to explain and teach inspection techniques and instruments, including CMM, comparators, and surface plate layout, communicating across multiple tiers of the organization.
- Complete capability studies – Complete capability studies (SPC) using Minitab, GAGEpack, or Excel.
- Apply statistical process control – Apply a working knowledge of statistical process control methods.
- Support reverse engineering – Assist with reverse engineering activities related to corrective action, process improvement, or customer activities, and develop, update, and modify programming to support them.
- Meet customer specific requirements – Complete and adhere to customer specific requirements, including but not limited to Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA), Gage R&R, Special Characteristics, Cpk/Ppk, and PPAP dimensional layout.
- Represent Technique – Professionally represent Technique when interacting with customer representatives.
- Prepare dimensional reports – Prepare detailed dimensional reports from high‑accuracy portable 3D measuring arm systems.
- Manage equipment calibration – Manage and monitor calibration of equipment to industry and software standards, and address countermeasures if calibration issues arise.
- Maintain PolyWorks software – Maintain a working knowledge of CMM/PolyWorks metrology software capabilities and limitations, and obtain and install PolyWorks updates on required workstations.
- Write PolyWorks inspection programs – Write complete PolyWorks inspection programs for any and all parts, fixtures, gages, etc.
- Write CPCS programs – Write CPCS to make periodic spot checks per control plans on a variety of parts in progress for adherence to specifications, and develop programs for special projects.
- Work with customers and technicians – Work with customers and technicians to develop and improve product.
- Other duties as assigned – Perform other duties as assigned by the Quality Manager.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or associate degree in engineering technology or other technical degree (equivalent combination of education and experience considered)
- 3–5 years of hands‑on experience in a quality control discipline related to manufacturing or engineering
- CMM experience required, including operating CMMs and writing inspection programs in PolyWorks
- Strong knowledge and working experience with GD&T
- Experience in an ISO 9000 environment
- Experience with the set‑up and use of laser inspection (PolyWorks), surface plates and height gages, profilometers, optical comparators, thread and pin gages, micrometers, calipers, bore gages, and angle gages
- Experience with SPC software (Minitab) and calibration software (GAGEpack)
- Strong root‑cause analysis skills and understanding of problem‑solving tools (5 Why, Fishbone)
- Deadline and detail‑oriented with strong time management skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer knowledge (Microsoft Office)
- Understanding of component and assembly prints and part drawings
- Self‑motivated with the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once
- Commitment to safe work practices as defined in company and department specific safety procedures
- Ability to work overtime and a flexible work schedule
- Largely sedentary role requiring talking, hearing, and filing, with occasional work alongside technicians on the manufacturing floor
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, moving mechanical parts, industrial equipment, vibration, and loud noise
- No travel required for this position

Position Type and Expected Hours:
This is a full‑time, non‑exempt position with a minimum of 40 hours per week with overtime as needed. Note: days and hours required may vary. Flexibility is required in all positions.
