Job summary

Bel Brands is seeking a Quality Supervisor to oversee on-site laboratory activities, lead a quality control program, and ensure adherence to food safety standards at our Wisconsin facility. The role focuses on coordinating QA procedures, training staff, and maintaining laboratory data and processes.

The ideal candidate has a dairy/food background, strong communication skills, and the ability to drive continuous improvement in lab and production environments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Science or related field preferred.
  • Ability to acquire State, HACCP, Auditor and PCQI certifications.
  • 2+ years in the dairy/food industry in QA, lab supervision, R&D or Production.
  • Knowledge of dairy or food quality testing methods.
  • Proficiency with Word/Excel/PowerPoint; SAP knowledge is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Review sanitation, lab and production processes for efficiency and accuracy.

Job Description Summary

The Quality Supervisor is responsible for coordinating all laboratory activities on site. This position utilizes their leadership skills, knowledge of food safety, lab procedures, employee safety and environment to ensure the laboratory operates smoothly while maintaining effective quality control and Food Safety systems and programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages the quality of raw materials, in-process and finished products as well as the overall product quality and safety.
  • Reviews the sanitation, laboratory and production processes to ensure efficiency and accuracy. Evaluate current lab processes, procedures, work instructions and test methods. Propose solutions for continuous improvement.
  • Set vision for department, following up on both short- and long-term objectives.
  • Manage and report the daily results of micro and analytical testing.
  • Approve, manage, and evaluate training of lab personnel to ensure understanding and compliance to applicable standards.
  • Develop lab training sessions and lab work instructions for the plant related processes.
  • Evaluate lab employees’ competency based on lab requirements as related to their job and teach them new skills through on-the-job training and Quality policies and procedures.
  • Manage direct reports and coordinate lab coverage as daily workload demands.
  • Manage, monitor, and maintain the laboratory databases; develop, maintain, and review quality control charts; share with technology team to prepare or review the preparation of control limits, detection limits, and action levels for laboratory analyses.
  • Support departmental budget by managing labor costs and timekeeping.
  • Inform Quality Management on lab testing nonconformances.
  • Apply technical skills and knowledge of applicable internal and external guidelines to help improve methods, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure all lab supplies and inventory are ordered and maintained to meet current test turnaround times for finished products.
  • Perform statistical calculations relating to test data, track and oversee data entry into the applicable applications.
  • Obtains certification for and perform both internal and supplier audits. Participate in facility GMP audits.
  • Monitor lab data trends for continuous improvement activities, corrective action, and proficiency performance.
  • Participates as a member of the IMS (Integrated Management System) team.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Safety, Environmental and Quality
  • Follows all safety rules and procedures by working safely and ensuring safety of others.
  • Follows all environmental protocols as applicable to the job.
  • Follows all Good Manufacturing Practices as stated within the policy.
  • Follow all food safety procedures.
  • Maintains a sanitary and safe work area; performs housekeeping duties as necessary and/or required.
  • Detects potentially hazardous conditions and problems and takes appropriate action to report and/or correct.
Qualifications and Competencies
  • Equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Science or related field preferred.
  • Ability to acquire State, HACCP, Auditor and PCQI certifications to perform all QA Laboratory testing procedures and IMS team member responsibilities.
  • Must have 2+ years of current experience in the dairy or food industry with emphasis in two or more of the following: Quality Control/Quality Assurance, Laboratory Supervision, Research & Development, and Production.
  • Knowledge of diary or food specific quality testing methods
  • Requires basic computer skills with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as some knowledge in integrated systems such as SAP.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills needed.
  • Must have knowledge of basic statistical testing practices.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office and laboratory equipment such as a personal computer, texture analyzer, incubator, PH meters, salt analyzer, scales, slide box and hot air oven.
  • Lean manufacturing experience is a plus.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a production and laboratory setting. Hours of work will generally be during regular business hours with at least 40 hours a week. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., at times there will be some variation in work hours due to special projects, deadlines and other quality concerns. Travel will be required to maintain all the necessary certification, audit suppliers or customers and participate at the yearly group quality meetings.

The employee occasionally works in proximity to fumes or air-born particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and in non-weather related extreme cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Protective Equipment:
