The Extension Aide supports the services provided by QMPS by serving to facilitate the needs of both dairy farms and the mastitis testing laboratory through daily interactions. Highly collaborative, this individual performs a variety of essential specimen collection, courier, and processing responsibilities that have a direct impact on herd health. Extremely reliable and flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads, they enjoy identifying and troubleshooting problems to complete routine and detailed tasks.

What You Will Do

  • Perform specimen courier duties using a university assigned vehicle; retrieve, reconcile and transport specimens from participating farms to the lab; provide backup support for other routes when needed
  • Perform sample collection according to established procedures
  • Perform detailed specimen processing to prepare submissions for testing
  • Provide backup support for diagnostic testing processes as needed
  • Assist with training of staff or students as requested
  • Provide backup support for lab administrative tasks as needed; perform data entry, answer to customer communications
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Employees of the AHDC must adhere to the Quality Assurance system, confidentiality statement, standard operating procedures, and organizational policies.

Employees are expected to meet all of the Cornell University Staff Skills for Success, which are essential for individual and organizational success.

Employees working in the lab and field must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

This is a 25 hour per week, part time position, however the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business. Employees are regularly required to work outside of normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, and during university holidays and scheduled breaks. Weekend work may be requested, as well as occasional overnight travel.

This is a Three-year term position; reappointment will be contingent upon funding and performance.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in a science-related field, with up to one year of experience in dairy farm operations, customer service, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to travel to other locations, including regional laboratories (Cobleskill, Ithaca, and Warsaw), for work-related activities, including meetings, training, and/or to provide client service
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 50 pounds

To Be Successful, You Will Need

  • Fluency with standard commercial software (Microsoft Office), with the aptitude to learn advanced functions and new software.
  • Ability to observe cattle facilities, safely obtain milk samples from dairy cattle, and identify abnormal milk in a barn setting
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships while meeting individual and unit goals in accordance with the broader mission
  • Works well both proactively and within a team environment
  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detailed record keeping; ability to correctly complete paperwork, seeking information as needed
  • Excellent self-management practices to successfully organize competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Ability to handle delicate, confidential information with tact and discretion

If you have all those things, great! Here are some preferred qualifications:

  • On-farm and field applied research experience with adherence to quality assurance programs involving academic and laboratory settings
  • Experience navigating on-farm dairy management software
  • Up to two years of experience in dairy farm operations, involving herd health, aseptic milk sample collection and milking equipment function
  • Ability to communicate in Basic Spanish Language
