Job summary

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company seeks a qualified Quality Manager to oversee quality programs on commercial projects. The role partners with project managers, superintendents, and engineers to implement the Quality Management Plan (QMP) and ensure adherence to contract documents across the build teams.

Ideal candidates will have a BS in an engineering/construction discipline, QMS experience, strong leadership, and a proactive, collaborative approach to drive quality throughout planning,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline, Engineering Technology or Construction Management, Construction Technology.
  • QMS/RMS experience preferred.
  • Proficient in construction means and methods and field operations.
  • Ability to develop project-specific written quality plans and integrate with software tools.
  • Clear communication, goal setting, and team collaboration.
  • Self-driven, motivated, and quality-focused.

Responsibilities

  • Assist project teams in developing and executing project-specific QMPs.
  • Support work in strict compliance with contract documents.
  • Review documents for constructability and accuracy.
  • Analyze project docs to extract critical quality elements for QMPs.
  • Coordinate inspection scheduling and lead inspection walks.
  • Lead quality meetings and interface with architects, engineers, and owners.
  • Monitor and improve quality health of projects and report findings.

Job description

National ENR Top 25 General Contractor seeking qualified quality manager for various commercial projects in a fast paced, entrepreneurial, team based working environment.

Qualified candidates shall possess a minimum of 3 to 20+ years of experience in the construction industry. This role requires support and oversight of project teams implementing the Whiting-Turner Quality Management Plan (QMP) on each of our projects. The quality manager must have a self-driven and motivated personality and must understand how quality management functions integrate with project planning, procurement and construction activities. The role requires working together with project managers, superintendents, and engineers to form an effective approach to quality management on behalf of our clients.

Desired attributes and competencies for this role include the following:
  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline, Engineering Technology or Construction Management, Construction Technology.
  • QMS/RMS experience is preferred.
  • Proficient in construction means and methods, work sequencing and field operations experience.
  • Understands quality process and protocols, how to develop project-specific written quality plans and can integrate with quality-related technology.
  • Able to clarify process expectations, set goals and performance metrics, explore root causes, develop team collaboration, and practice effective time management.
  • Competent in teaching, training, coaching and facilitation with an adaptable and flexible approach. Respected as a competent construction quality professional.
  • Can connect and work with others, establish proper clarity and focus, is self-driven and motivated, value-driven and dedicated to personal and organizational development.
  • Proficient in risk analysis and mitigation, effective written and oral communication, strategic development, and process refinement.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 suite and has knowledge of or can easily become proficient in software programs used by the project team (e.g., Touchplan, Procore, Autodesk, Bluebeam, etc.)
  • Travel is required.
A more detailed list of responsibilities and duties include the following:
  • Assist project teams in developing and executing project-specific QMPs.
  • Support project teams in executing the work in strict compliance with the contract documents.
  • Review contract documents and other project documents for constructability and accuracy.
  • Understand, critically analyze, and extract critical quality elements from construction documents, submittals, etc. in support of developing QMPs.
  • Collaborate with project teams to establish roles and responsibilities for scheduling inspections, managing the inspection process, and participating in and leading inspection walks.
  • Participate in and lead portions of quality-related project meetings including, but not limited to, pre-installation meetings, preconstruction meetings, kick-off meetings, mock-up review meetings, first-work inspections, subcontractor weekly syncs, specification reviews, owner progress meetings and others as deemed necessary to provide support and oversight of the QMP and the quality health of the project.
  • Lead by example with quality planning and inspection of work in place, support the managing, documenting, and tracking of conformances and non-conformances.
  • Interface with architect, engineers, and owner representatives along with project teams to ensure understanding of and compliance with quality requirements and expectations.
  • Review the effectiveness of project teams at implementing and executing each quality management plan and be able to communicate with project teams and regional leadership on the quality health of projects and offer suggestions for improvement.
